The cancer-survivor is taking part -- for a third time -- in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer in hopes that others with the devastating disease can be lucky, too. The two-day, more than 200-kilometre cycling event between Toronto and Niagara Falls raises funds for personalized cancer medicine research at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. While the ride isn't until June 8-9, 2013, the launch of the sixth Ontario ride is today (Wednesday). Dubbed Gear Up Day, participants, including Murray, will don their riding gear and officially register for the 2013 event. Murray was diagnosed with melanoma at age 35 and has been cancerfree since 2002. "I had two surgeries and four months of chemotherapy and I can tell you a two-day bike ride, once a year, is absolutely nothing compared to that -- compared to what people are going through every day," he said. With cancer experienced by at least three generations of Murray's family, including his mother, father and grandparents, the Oakville resident says when he's grinding up hills during the ride, it takes away the helplessness a diagnosis of cancer brings. "Cancer makes you feel powerless, but the ride helps you feel like you can do something," Murray said. "It's inspirational to be riding with other cancer survivors and inspiring to be riding in memory of those who have passed (away)." There are many reasons Murray continues to participate in the ride, but the most important one, he notes, is to give back to the hospital that saved his life -- Toronto's Princess $750,000 last year -- this year, they're setting their sights on the $1-million mark and hoping to expand their team to include more riders. "Doing the ride, or any fundraising or volunteering, helps you realize you really are one of the lucky ones," Murray said. "It helps you give back." Chuck Murray Margaret. "People may not see it, but this sort of funding helps in so many ways and I am a living example of it," Murray said, noting one of his motivations to fundraise for the ride came after his oncologist told him they found his cancer thanks to advancements made in tracking the spread of the disease. "My oncologist told me how a national database to track the growth of melanoma, established just three years before my diagnosis, was the reason they checked me for further spread. Without funding to gather that data, I would not be here today. "You don't always need huge medical breakthroughs to save lives, but you do need funding for resources." Although Murray has been cancerfree for 10 years since his diagnosis, he says no one ever really beats cancer, as it is always there in the background.
