actually use the bike lane. Town Director of Engineering and Construction Dan Cozzi noted each residence on River Oaks Boulevard East has a minimum of two driveway parking spaces and a double vehicle garage. He also said on-street parking is available on streets that intersect with River Oaks Boulevard East. For these reasons, Town staff recommended the bike lanes and no parking anytime provisions be left in place. Several residents said parking on neighbouring streets would create conflict with people living on those streets. Others said with no cars parked along the street, more people are speeding along River Oaks Boulevard East. Concerns were also raised about what residents were supposed to do if their driveway was being worked on. Ward 2 Town Councillor, and cycling enthusiast, Pam Damoff called on the committee not to remove the bike lanes stating it would be a step backward for the Town's future planning and would send the wrong message. Since speeding appeared to be a concern for some residents, Damoff called on the committee to fix that problem in a way other than removing the bike lanes. She noted interest in cycling is growing in Oakville and bike lanes are needed to accommodate it. Going against the plan LAST CHANCE FOR PRE-CONSTRUCTION PRICES! I am a big believer in the Active Transportation Master Plan and I certainly believe cycling is the way of the future because we can't keep driving cars, but we do have to look at local conditions," said Ward 5 Town Councillor Marc Grant. "We have heard from Town staff that this is a very unique situation where we have this long stretch of road. We need to find a way to adapt this plan to make it work for everybody... Let people who are driving, park and have that area as a cycling lane for cyclists." Ward 2 Town and Regional Councillor Cathy Duddeck voted against removing the bike lanes stating she was concerned about the safety of cyclists who under this option would have to pull into traffic to steer around parked vehicles on River Oaks Boulevard East. She also voiced concerns about what she saw as a subversion of the Active Transportation Master Plan. "I don't think we can start going piecemeal on a plan. This is no different than what we are doing with our linear waterfront where we are trying to grow it, not put barricades up and say that just because someone didn't want it we won't continue with it there," said Duddeck. "I'm very disappointed if we opt out so early of what is a very, very good plan," said the councillor. Until council has had an opportunity to review this issue, the no parking anytime restrictions will not be enforced.
