Mock-up rooms assist new hospital design Continued from page 1 9 · Friday, October 26, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com to us." During a Tuesday tour of the single-patient room mock-up, Rodgers directed attention to a family space that has been created complete with a pullout couch so a visitor could spend the night. There is also a large window, which gives a patient a view of the grounds below. She also said patients in these rooms have the ability to control the room's temperature. The room also features a connected washroom complete with shower facility and a device that not only empties, but sterilizes bedpans. This eliminates the need to take the soiled bedpan out of the room. The washroom is large enough to accommodate a person entering with a wheelchair or walker. "At the existing hospital, you would have to go down the hall to have a shower," said Rodgers. "There might also be a line up because that shower is for 30 patients." Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) President and CEO John Oliver said the room has been designed to facilitate easy cleaning, so once a patient has left, any germs they have left behind can be completely removed. Cupboards have also been added just outside the rooms to house supplies for the caregivers. Oliver said at OTMH this equipment is housed in the patient's room, so if he or she has an infectious disease, all of this equipment must be thrown away even if it has not been used. 20 OFF % ALL CORK WALL & FLOORING INSTALLATIONS SELECT PATTERNS OF CORK FLOORING ALSO ON SALE. He said it will save nursing staff time by allowing them to move from one hospital computer to another without having to go through the whole log on and start up process each time. Under this system a nurse will use either a swipe card or their fingerprint to instantly call up the patient information they were viewing at a previous computer. A tour of the workstation mock-up confirmed that the new facility will also feature a pneumatic tube system. This is expected to save HHS staff time by transporting samples from one part of the hospital to the lab at another part or carrying drugs from the hospital pharmacy to where they are needed. Oliver said getting HHS staff and others to weigh in on the mock-ups is important because in the case of the single-patient room mock-up, what HHS staff see is eventually going to be replicated in the new hospital about 400 times. The heavy focus on single-patient rooms is intended to not only promote patient comfort, but infection control as well. The Town of Oakville has committed to donate $130 million to the construction of the new hospital. The Third Line/Dundas Street hospital will replace OTMH, located on Reynolds Street, when it opens in 2015.
