They will help lay the bricks of the new health centre. "It was exciting to see that hospital, from ground up, start happening and I love the thought of knowing I can walk into that hospital, of going to Laurie's Hope and say, `I helped make that room happen.' I think a lot of people love that feeling," Spence said. Laurie's Hope would be the name of the room, in memory of Sturm, a 59-year-old who died of pancreatic cancer, who was diagnosed only three months before her death. "She was one of my full inspirations," Spence said. "We're a very close family. We share all the holidays. We do girls things. We do things together with our husbands. We're very close. And yet, he was affected by this disease." "Every day we're going into Mount Sinai for my father-in-law, watching him cope and function. He did beautifully in the hospital, but it was such a negative time that I said we have to do something," Spence said. Despite the negatives of cancer, there was one "miracle" that occurred. Sturm was a huge Bruce Springsteen fan and when she was diagnosed, Spence called Springsteen's management team to see if she could get tickets to his concert in Toronto. The organization came through and donated six front-row seat tickets to Sturm and her family. No promises were made to Sturm but the hope had been there, and the day of the concert just before the start of the show, Sturm met The Boss himself. "Bruce Springsteen was our miracle man and that's what we called him all summer for my aunt. He made us believe in miracles," Spence said. "That was huge at her funeral. We played Bruce's music. Because of that, it made me believe, if I can do a little bit like that and make a difference, I can try to do this." And thus, the fundraiser was born. Entry to the event is free, but there will be prizes and raffles. One of the prizes will be a set of tickets to a Bruce Springsteen concert in Vancouver on Nov. 26.
