www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, November 7, 2012 · 20 Titans' semifinal loss extends Oakville's absence from football final By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR One of the longest-running trends in Halton high school sports will continue for at least another year. The Holy Trinity Titans were denied a spot in tomorrow's (Thursday's) senior boys' football Tier 1 final with a 15-13 loss to the M.M. Robinson Rams last Friday at Trinity. Robinson advances to take on the Corpus Christi Longhorns in an all-Burlington championship game, meaning that a nonOakville high school will be the Halton Tier 1 champion for the 15th consecutive time since tiering began in 1998. "It's very difficult to beat the top Burlington teams. They're fed by a great rep system," said Titans head coach Joe Moscato. "There's no coincidence an Oakville high school hasn't won the Division 1 champion- ship (for such a long time)." Moscato and the Titans were close in recent years, reaching the title game in 2009 and 2010 but losing both times to a powerful Notre Dame Fighting Irish squad. Trinity hasn't been back to the senior Tier 1 final since. "Those teams who went up against Notre Dame were players we'd coached since Grade 7 and Grade 8. It was a different beast," Moscato said. "It took a lot of hard work on kids' parts and us as coaches and as a program. (Trinity coaches) aren't as involved in rep football anymore. We don't have the time, we're a bit older and have kids. To maintain that level of success is difficult, and we're starting to see a little bit of regression." The Titans' loss to Robinson Friday could be seen as an upset, considering Trinity went 5-1 during the regular season (Robinson was 4-2) and also beat the Rams 24-14 in the opening week of the season. Trinity played Friday without injured starting running back Toluwa Fayemi and offensive tackle Matt Silva, while centre Giancarlo Damiano was sidelined in the third quarter. "That's not to take anything away from (Robinson)," Moscato said. "They won, and they won fair and square." Mason Stoddard scored the Titans' lone touchdown and Michael Brooks added a field goal. Trinity threatened to take the lead several times in the fourth quarter but missed a pair of field goals. "We had our opportunities to win," Moscato said. "We just didn't." Robinson and the undefeated Longhorns will kick off tomorrow's final at 11 a.m. at McMaster University's Ron Joyce Stadium, the venue for all Halton football finals. Senior Tier 2 Four Oakville teams will be alive for a senior Tier 2 football title when the playoffs begin this week. The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders will be home to Georgetown in one of two firstround games Friday, while the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils will host the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers in the other. Both contests will kick off at 2 p.m. The lower-seeded survivor of those games will play the top-ranked T.A. Blakelock Tigers next week in the semifinals, and the other first-round winner will play Georgetown's Christ the King. The senior Tier 2 final is slated for Nov. 20. Senior Tier 3 The White Oaks Wildcats are the lone Oakville school competing in the five-team senior Tier 3 loop. White Oaks (5-0) will host Burlington Central in a semifinal contest Nov. 13. Junior Tier 1 Trinity will visit the Assumption Crusaders in the junior Tier 1 semis tomorrow after dumping Corpus Christi 35-20 last Friday. Notre Dame will travel to face the Nelson Lords in tomorrow's other semifinal. Winners will meet in the regional final Nov. 15. Junior Tier 2 Abbey Park, Oakville Trafalgar, St. Thomas Aquinas and T.A. Blakelock have made the junior Tier 2 playoffs that begin this week. OT will be home to Abbey Park and Aquinas will entertain Christ the King in first-round games that will kick off Friday at noon. Winners will face either top-seeded Georgetown or second-ranked Blakelock in the semis Nov. 14. The final is slated for Nov. 20. Junior Tier 3 White Oaks will visit Lester B. Pearson in a semifinal contest Nov. 13. The junior Tier 3 championship will be played Nov. 19. Improved defence, team play lifts Eagles Continued from page 19 "That game was a real eye opener," said Abbey Park coach Dan Bonanca. Gunn said the team made a better commitment to playing defence and played more as a team after the loss. Those lessons were on display Monday. Abbey Park shut down the lanes making it tough for Trinity's Tiffany McNeil to drive to the basket while also cutting down on fouls, limiting their opponents' trips to the foul line. Erica Mandel, a captain on last year's Abbey Park Halton junior championship team Abbey Park had 11 points -- finishing with 13 -- in the first half as the Eagles built a 34-20 lead. Gunn had 10 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to prevent another Titan comeback. Fleming and Tori Freeman each had five points and MacKenzie had four. "If we play (Loyola) the way we played Holy Trinity," Gunn said, "I think we can give them a run for their money."
