At the same time, he's been influenced by the places he has visited and that is evident in his latest album, Tales of a Gypsy. "I think every experience, every place that I've travelled to has contributed to the way I compose my music," Linstead said. "This album really encompasses a lot of the experiences that I've had through travelling." Latin guitar is still the main instrument on the CD, but listeners will notice influences from South America, such as pan pipes, along some gypsy jazz style music, which Linstead said was influenced by the late guitar player Django Reinhardt, and even some Cajun sounding tracks. Linstead has also invited a number of instrumentalists for the CD. Along with the pan pipes, listeners will hear violin, accordion, percussion and other sounds. But Spanish guitar is still front and centre. "Tales of a Gypsy just comes from the concept of the gypsies where they were nomadic, they travelled a lot, they didn't believe in borders, they roamed freely and I always like that idea," Linstead said of the album name. "Being a musician, it's a lot like being a gypsy. We travel around to different places, to different countries, different cities and we bring our music. We also learn things about different people, different cultures when we travel abroad." This CD follows up on Linstead's most recent album, Mistico, which was released in 2009 and won a number of awards. Linstead also releases music under a different name, Sevara, under which name he produced a yoga album that was released last year. Linstead recorded, engineered, mixed, produced and mastered the new album in his studio. However, he was pleased with the end product. He calls the album an evolution of his past work. "I've been releasing albums since 1999. I think I've put out nine or 10 albums, if you include the yoga and piano album I have as well, so there's been a lot of growth, a lot of experiences in the years since then," he said. "You can only do so much of the same thing. As an artist, you want to expand; you want to try new things. There are a lot of new rhythms that I haven't incorporated. I still kept it as Latin guitar, but on this album I brought in some smooth jazz sounds."
