Class act at Abbey Park By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Abbey Park High School students planned to party in style last night at their semi-formal. However, the dispute between teachers, education support workers and the Province over Bill 115 put a stop to the dance. To show their displeasure and school spirit at the same time, at least 100 Abbey Park students dressed in their finest to attend classes yesterday. "When we first heard the unfortunate news, my friend and I began to think, `What if we wore our semi clothes to school?'" said student council vice president Genevieve Taylor, Grade 12. "Regardless of the ban you've put on us, we're still able to show our school spirit and enjoy the event by having it in school. We've still got everybody together." Students spent the day as usual however they sported suits and dresses. The student council had sold 100 tickets to the semi-formal in the first day of ticket sales and expected to sell out at 425 tickets. Student council has since refunded all tickets sold for the dance slated for a local conference centre, but has let the deposit paid to the venue stand as it's hoped the dance could be held at a later date. Student council is also hoping to hold a Valentine's Day dance and a prom at the end of the school year, both of which are now in question. "To miss a right of passage like prom would be a pretty unfortunate circumstance," said student council president David Zilkey, Grade 12. Students discussed holding a non-school sanctioned event, but there are challenges involved, Zilkey said. They would have to find a venue that would rent to teenagers. There are liability issues. Parent supervisors would be needed to replace school personnel and that would likely lead to safety concerns.
