Students gave harbour an architectural boost The harbour area around Oakville's 16 Mile Creek received a facelift courtesy of some local students this fall -- metaphorically at least. Grades 11 and 12 students from across the town presented their plans to improve the waterfront as part of On the Brink, an architecture design competition. The competition was organized by the staff at John Willmott Architect Inc., with the goal of helping the community and hopefully inspiring a few young Frank Gehry's. "I've always thought it would be a great thing to help promote architecture and help the students build their portfolio," said John Willmott, principal architect and president at John Willmott Architect Inc. "It's also great to give back to the community and it's a lot of fun." The students were asked to design an outdoor skating rink and surrounding pavilion area. Their park area must also include an area to store a zamboni and preferably be multifaceted enough to use in the summer. "We chose the rink project this year because it is the appropriate size and depth for high school students and they've really excelled," said Willmott. 39 · Thursday, December 27, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com plunge right in: John Willmott Architect Inc. held its second annual architectural contest for students. JAMES HOGGETT / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER "Also, it represents a project students studying architecture would be handed in first-year university." To showcase their designs, students chose to submit architectural drawings, plans, and created models. In addition, students had to present their materials to a panel of judges. The judging panel consisted of three notable architects in the area, including Willmott. Also judging were Linda Neumayer, a classmate of Willmott's who contributed to the revitalization of Nathan Phillips Square See Competition page 43 Canada's BIGGEST and BEST Selection of Leather, Wool, Down and Shearling Coats DEC 27 9am-9pm Hurry for Best Selection!
