Oakville's Planning and Development Council voted unanimously, Monday, to approve the creation of the Downtown Oakville Heritage District. The decision means special guidelines are now in place to protect heritage and non-heritage buildings located within an area loosely bounded by Robinson Street to the south, Dunn Street to the east, Navy Street to the west and Randall Street to the north. The guidelines govern everything from alterations and additions to heritage and non-heritage buildings to the demolition and removal of buildings and structures within the district. "I think council made a wise decision," said Oakville's former mayor and Chair of Heritage Oakville Harry Barrett. "This has gone on for a year and a half and I can't think of a thing in all the years I've been involved with the Town that had more public input. I think this is a move forward for the town." Adam Vander Heyden during a swearing-in ceremony in December at the Bishop already collaring suspects By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF He's only been here for about a month, but Halton police dog Bishop is already saving lives, catching criminals and making the community a safer place. The 15-month-old German shepherd, who hails from Kentucky, recently helped police locate a mentally ill man who had wandered into a wooded area during a particularly cold night. Prior to the rescue, Bishop was tasked with locating a man who had broken into a Milton school and was hiding from police. The man quickly surrendered after being cornered by the barking canine. Bishop has also been used to detect narcotics hidden inside vehicles that have been stopped by police. Overall, police said, they are happy with Bishop's work. "The dog can do his job," said Const. Adam Vander Heyden, Bishop's handler. "The biggest challenge is me learning to recognize the subtle signs he shows me. His body language essentially is what I've got to learn. You've got to realize when he has something and when he doesn't." See Police page 3 Burlington Convention Centre for 10 new constables. Bishop was also officially brought into the Halton Regional Police Service during the ceremony. ceramics porcelain travertine marble glass natural stone mosaics slate granite quartz FACTORY TILE DEPOT 1360 Speers Road (East of 3rd line) Oakville We shop the world so you don't have to!
