Fareshare's Easter food drive kicks off Friday by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Wednesday, March 13, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville Fareshare food bank's annual Easter Food Drive begins Friday (March 15) and organizers are asking residents to be extra generous this season as these donations must last six months until its next drive in October. "Supporting the Easter Food Drive is especially important because this is the last food drive before the one we put on during the Thanksgiving season. The food donated at Easter has to last six months until Thanksgiving," said Fareshare volunteer president Nancy Bromberg. She also noted Fareshare's Easter 2012 Food Drive had the poorest results the non-profit organization had seen in many years. "The food bank was as empty as I had ever seen it," said Bromberg. Helping Oakville families in need since 1988, Fareshare served an average of 364 registered families (approximately 1,200 people) last year -- it traditionally serves between 350-400 families every month. "We served 38 additional children in 2012 compared to 2011 -- a figure that is especially sad and distressing," Bromberg said. "After the Easter Food Drive, we hope to see our warehouse full, so all our families will receive a full order of groceries on each of their monthly visits." This year's Easter food drive runs from Friday, March 15 through to Saturday, March 30. Food can be dropped off at any Oakville supermarkets where collection bins have been provided by Fareshare, all local fire stations and at the food bank, which is located at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6 and open from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. during the food drive. Most-needed items include: · powdered laundry soap · soda crackers (four sleeves) Fareshare volunteers, from left to right, Jan Little, Sally McFadyn and Leslie Bell hold some of the donations collected in support of the food bank's upcoming Easter food drive, which begins on Friday (March 15).
