Have you checked your smoke alarms yet? While local residents changed their clocks Sunday (March 10) for daylight savings, the Oakville Fire Department is once again reminding residents to get into the habit of regularly checking and replacing the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Fire officials note that nearly half of all fatal fires in Ontario occur because there are no working smoke alarms in the home. The most common reason the alarms do not work is because the batteries are old or have been taken out. "Most deaths due to fire happen at night when everyone is sleeping," said Gary Laframboise, chief fire prevention officer with the Oakville Fire Department. "We can't stress enough the importance of regularly replacing batteries in smoke alarms. Sometimes you only have about a minute or two to escape a fire, so it's absolutely critical that alarms are working properly." Laframboise said it is Ontario law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of a home and outside each sleeping area. For added protection, the Oakville Fire Department encourages the installation of smoke alarms inside all bedrooms. Residents and property owners are also reminded to replace smoke alarms every 10 years to ensure they work correctly. Tampering with, or removing batteries from a smoke alarm is illegal and failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements could result in a ticket for $235 or a fine of up to $50,000. Residents are encouraged to follow these simple steps when developing their home fire escape plan: Health F E A S T 23 | Thursday, March 14, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Connected to your Community" O F F A I R W A Y S Most deaths due to fire happen at night when everyone is sleeping.
