by Otilia Rehnstrom Grade 10, T.A. Blakelock H.S. M ore than 50 years ago, when the Beatles stepped onto the musical stage and swept nations off their feet for the first time, who would have imagined their music would still be played so widely today? That they would be labelled one of the greatest bands in musical history? The four lads from Liverpool: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr undeniably left a mark of innovation and inspiration on the world. Despite the fact their work together ended more than 40 years ago, their legendary songs are still remembered, referenced, and played. On Oct. 5, 1962, the Beatles released their first hit single Love Me Do and the date now serves as the mark that signals the beginning of the Beatles' fame. Last year, people from all across the world celebrated the start of this fame in whatever way they could. Multiple organizations in Liverpool took it upon themselves to organize a celebration to honour the legends. Hundreds of tribute bands, among thousands of Beatles fans, travelled to Liverpool during the course of the year to take part in the events. The Beatles: 50 years and counting Medical Office Building At the time, it seemed unreal and I still have a hard time understanding just how diverse and large the Beatles' fan base really is. I try to imagine what Beatlemania looked and felt like back in the 60s, but something tells me my image is nowhere near as powerful as it truly was. It's been 50 years, yet their music is still played on radios, iPods, commercials, and movies. But most importantly, they continue to inspire and encourage people from all over the world. People of all ages enjoy their music today. There's no doubt they are definitely the most influential band of the century. I hope that generations after mine continue to listen to their music. After all, they made history, and history can't be changed. The Cavern, located on Mathew Street in Liverpool -- noted for being a popular location for the Beatles' early performances -- held a celebration last year called the International Beatles Week Festival -- 50 Years of Celebration from Aug. 22-28. The celebration gave a great opportunity for tribute bands from around the world to come together and show their love for their idols by playing Beatles' songs at the Cavern. I remember the place was teeming with fans and overflowing excitement.
