www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, March 27, 2013 | 12 Ups and downs of Oakville's Earth Hour power use by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff While power consumption in Oakville went down for Earth Hour Saturday, it didn't drop as drastically as in the past. Oakville Hydro reported electricity demand in Oakville dropped by 2.9 per cent (5.29 megawatts) during the annual event, which took place from 8:30-9:30 p.m., as residents shut off their lights to mark the global conservation initiative. It translates to just under 2,000 households. This year's power drop is lower than last year's reduction of five per cent, and 2011's 3.6 per cent reduction. It is, however, considerably higher than Oakville's 2010 performance when resident participation in Earth Hour only yielded a 1.7 per cent reduction. In 2009, the town achieved a far greater drop when it reduced its power consumption by 13.3 per cent. "People across the globe take part and we are proud that Oakville participated in such a widespread, important initiative." Besides many residents, the Town of Oakville, Halton Region, Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board and the Halton Regional Police Service also participated in this year's Earth Hour by shutting off lights in non-essential areas or holding Earth Hour activities. St. Jude's Anglican Church on Williams Street hosted its annual Earth Hour concert. "On behalf of council, I would like to thank all Oakville residents who participated in Earth Hour," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "Together we're creating a cleaner, greener town. Our hope is that residents take up the challenge to reduce energy use every day." Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when more than two million people turned off lights for an hour. Since then, the annual event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has grown to include hundreds of millions of people around the globe in an initiative that symbolizes their commitment to fighting climate change. This year, the phenomenon attracted participation from more than 150 countries and more than 7,000 cities. Toronto`s power use was down by about seven per cent during Earth Hour, slightly better than the 6.8 per cent reported in 2012. Mississauga reported a 2.4 per cent reduction in electricity use, which is down from the three per cent reduction in 2012 and significantly down from the eight per cent reduction seen in 2011. Milton Hydro reported a 2.1 per cent electricity reduction drop for Earth Hour. For more information about Earth Hour, visit www.earthhour.org.
