Farm to School brings a better understanding to students Continued from p.16 their food comes from. "The reason behind the program is to showcase that you don't have to -- especially in the summer and the fall -- purchase produce that comes from 3,000 miles away. We have it in our own backyard," said Derek Albrecht, Farm to School and Food co-ordinator for Food for Thought. "This is creating an awareness for the kids." Sheridan Public is of one 21 Farm to School schools in Halton Region. Through the program, Food for Thought delivers locally grown, fresh produce once a week to the schools in the fall. Farm to Schools has been going on for several years, which has exposed more than 7,000 students to farm fresh foods weekly for eight weeks during the fall at the partner schools. "Our focus has always been on healthy food, but more recently we have been students learned about growing apples and pears, and from egg farmers and vegetable growers. They also heard from the Dairy Farmers of Ontario. The students get an opportunity to learn about growing food hands on and to see what is growing in the community. "This is to increase that connection to local food. It's not just something that appears magically on a shelf. "It's growing in our region and we have access to quite a few different things," Albrecht said. The program educates students about healthy and local food. Albrecht called the students future food consumers, which is why it is not only important to give them this information, he said, but also that they can pass on the information to their parents. "Promoting this idea that we have this high quality food growing in our region is an important thing for our local economy as well as the health of the citizens of our region as well, said Albrecht."
