Oakville Hydro hooking up with elementary students by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 13 | Friday, April 26, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville Hydro joined Burlington, Halton Hills and Milton hydro agencies Wednesday in supporting the Halton District and Catholic school boards' new energy conservation and demand management program. As part of Earth Week, Halton elementary schools will launch the Energy Drill Program -- a demand response program, which aims to reduce the amount of electricity being consumed in times of high demand. This week representatives from each utility were on-site at selected schools to participate in the Energy Drill and to share their expertise and knowledge with the students. As part of the partnership, Oakville, Burlington, Halton Hills and Milton hydro operations will each support their local area public schools in their energy conservation and demand management programs. They will do so through financial support towards curriculum resources and resources for educators, elementary and secondary student engagement projects, training workshops for educators and custodial teams, and through support of the launch of the Energy Drill Program and overall Energy Management Strategy. The Energy Drill Program has multiple goals," said Suzanne Burwell, environmental sustainability coordinator with the Halton District School Board. First, to reduce consumption and demand for electricity in times of high demand in Ontario. Second, it will help students make connections between classroom learning, environmental conditions (i.e. high temperatures) and actions taken in their community by industrial, commercial and residential electricity consumers, said Burwell. "Most importantly, it gives students the opportunity to take action on an issue which has both immediate and long term implications." Individual schools will come up with their own ideas and programs on how to save energy at school. It's hoped students will take lessons learned and the message home with them and build energy conservation into their own lifestyles. Oakville Hydro Vice President of Customer Service and Organizational Development Julie Millington said the organization is happy to participate in the event. "The program allows Halton utilities to promote the message of conservation to students, who will hopefully bring what they learn home and make conserving energy part of their daily life," she said. "It is never too early to start saving energy." picture this HUGE SELECTION OF INDOOR & OUTDOOR FURNITURE VISIT OUR 15,000 SQ. FT.
