The No. 3-ranked Hurricanes beat both higher rated teams in the tournament semifinals and finals to earn an Ontario Volleyball Association gold medal. The Hurricanes dumped No. 2 seed Forest City of London 25-13, 25-19 in the championship match. After winning their pool on Day 1 of the tournament and taking the power pool on Day 2, the Hurricanes advanced to the semifinals on Day 3 of the tournament, held at RIM Park in Waterloo earlier this month. Halton defeated No. 1 ranked Aurora Storm 25-20, 25-14 to advance to the final. Phil Peters, who took over the Hurricanes' head coaching duties in mid-season, watched his crew battle through numerous long rallies at the provincials. Oakville coach, players help Burlington Blaze to Tier 3 volleyball title The Burlington Blaze defeated the Ottawa Maverick Longhorns 20-25, 25-12, 15-5 to win the Division 1, Tier 3 provincial boys' volleyball championship in Waterloo last month. Coached by Burlington's Sai and Diane Kong and Oakville's Alex Montminy, the Blaze earned its first provincial volleyball gold medal. The Blaze defeated the Maverick Longhorns of Ottawa 20-25, 25-12, 15-5 in the Tier 3 final. The Blaze struggled early in the tournament, losing matches to Tier 1 teams Kingston Pegasus and Pakman from Mississauga as well as to Tier 2's E381 from Etobicoke. The Blaze fought back, defeating Chatham Ballhawks 15-11, Barrie Elites 15-13 and the Waterloo Tigers 15-9 in Standings as of May 8, 2013 close, third-set matches. D4 basketball silver for Vytis bantam girls The Oakville Vytis bantam girls #2 team claimed Division 4 silver at the Ontario Basketball Association's Ontario Cup championships recently in Windsor. Oakville won its first four games at the tournament before falling 29-18 to the Chatham-Kent Wildcats -- a team the Vytis beat 29-26 to open the tournament -- in the championship game. Oakville's other wins came against Jayhawks Basketball (3727), Guelph Phoenix-Mathieu (35-25) and Vaughan Panthers (30-28). The Vytis finished the season with an overall record of 21-12 and won gold, silver and bronze medals in tournament play. Members of the team are Tristan Delamere, Catilin Dougall, Natalie Hamel, Katelyn Crawley, Katie Thom, Jessica Harraway, Emma McEwen, Erin van Huuksloot, Erica Sampson, Johovanna Duran, Trinity Duff and Aiyana Salvatore.
