Jack's Lemonade Stand changes format this year Jack's Lemonade has changed its format this year. Rather than one big event every year, there will be a "virtual" lemonade stand open for donations online at www. jackslemonade.comandsmaller lemonade stands around town throughout the summer. "We moved away from having the big event this year for several reasons. The most significant one is that we are partnering with The Oakville Waterfront Festival from Aug. 2-4 and bringing Jack's Lemonade Stand there," said Jodi Frers, Jack's mom. "As well, rather than raising funds for SickKids Hospital, Jack will be fundraising instead for equipment and services benefitting children at the new Oakville hospital. "Jack is now 10 and his 7-yearold brother, Christopher, have been watching the construction of the new Oakville hospital on an almost daily basis and really wanted to be part of this project. Both Jack and Christopher were born at OTMH and Jack has been a patient many times at the hospital." A lemonade stand will be at St. Bernadette elementary school Friday, May 31 -- this will be its fourth year. What began as a simple lemonade stand at the end of the driveway in 2007 for Jack Yielding has since grown to a regionwide awareness campaign and support of the little miracles Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) offers to its patients every day -- although Frers admits the first year wasn't so simple as the charity fundraiser attracted more than 400 people and raised $14,000. To date, Jack's Lemonade has raised close to $300,000. "We're thrilled how the community has supported Jack throughout the years. It truly has meant so much to our family," said Frers. When Jack was two, he was diagnosed with intractable epilepsy, so severe that his seizures became too strong to be controlled by medication. As Jack's epilepsy got worse, doctors at SickKids told Frers her son would need surgery and in 2010, at age 7, Jack underwent three surgeries on his brain (totalling 24 hours) with a 60 per cent chance it would stop the seizures. Most of Jack's left frontal lobe was removed during his last surgery, forcing him to relearn how to walk and talk. Today, three years post surgery, Jack continues going to school, reading and playing. "We saw his neurosurgeon at SickKids a couple of months ago and he said that `Jack's recovery and health is what we dream of.' So our family continues to celebrate every good day that Jack is healthy and we try to live each day to the fullest," Frers said.
