www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, June 5, 2013 | 26 Oakville's Primrose, 51, smashes women's half marathon record Oakville 51-year-old Elizabeth Primrose shattered the course record on the way to winning the Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon Sunday. Primrose, a swimming and sports conditioning coach at Oakville National Fitness, finished the 21.1-kilometre course in a time of one hour, 24 minutes and 52 seconds, taking more than five minutes off the record. She finished more than six minutes ahead of her nearest competitor. "It's great that I'm still able to race this well. I completed my first marathon in 1982 in two hours and 50 minutes. Based on this half marathon time, I could probably run close to that time now," said Primrose, Canada's first-ever professional triathlon champion (1988). "I guess I'm training smarter as I get older." Primrose's next race will be this Sunday (June 9), the Race For Teens At Risk at Oakville's Coronation Park. "Racing is great, but it's even better when I race for a cause like the Drew Hildebrand Teen Benefit Fund which helps teenagers navigate the pressures and dangers of such things as violence, drugs and alcohol, including the misuse of prescription drugs," Primrose said. Elizabeth Primrose triumphantly crosses the finish line of Sunday's Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon. The 51-year-old Oakville resident not only won the race by a wide margin, she also beat the course record time by more than five minutes. | photo submitted Halton Minor Ball Hockey League Standings as of June 3, 2013 Team A) Lear To Play 3-6 A1-LTP Kings (White) A2-LTP ADT Security Leafs (Blue) A3-LTP Jets (Silver) A4- LTP Julian Dean Photography Flyers (Orange) A5-LTP Esso Bruins (Yellow) A6-LTP BLOMHA Red Wings (Red) A7-LTP Stars (Green) A8-LTP Penguins (Black) B) Tyke 7-8 1 B4-Toronto Marlies (Blue) 2 B3-Tripemco Insurance Thrashers (Red) 3 B1-Hamilton Bulldogs (Black) 4 B2-Play It Again Sports Tigers (Orange) C) Novice 9-10 1 C3-Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey (Yellow) 2 C6-Mantis Attack (Black) 3 C7-Tigers (Orange) 4 C1-Dynamic Healing Massage Seahawks (Green) 5 C5-Profile Investigation Lightning (Blue) 6 C2-Fitness Firm (Silver) 7 C8-Novice White Demons 8 C4-Granite Ridge Golf Club (Red) D) Atom 11-12 1 D4-Ice Hawks (White) 2 D2-Kontek Ecology Silver Hawks 3 D5-Atom (Black) 4 D3-Mainway Sports Centre (Red) 5 D7-Atom (Kelly Green) 6 D6-Vacuum Shoppe Snipers (Orange) 7 D8-Oakville Beaver (Yellow) 8 D1-Fitness Firm (Blue) E) Peewee 13-14 1 E2-Peewee Kontek Ecology Inc Goons (Black) 2 E1-Peewee Burlington Post Just Because (Red) 3 E4-Peewee Vipond Inc (Blue) 4 E3-Peewee Pioneer Energy LP (Yellow) F) Bant/Jr 15+ 1 F7-BT/Jr Light Blue Bombers 2 F3-BT/Jr National Sports Penguins (Yellow) 3 F4-BT/Jr Corpa Investigations Inc (Blue) 4 F5-BT/Jr (Orange) 5 F2-BT/Jr LavaLife Heartbreakers (Red) 6 F6-BT/Jr Olympic Trophies (Black) 7 F1-BT/Jr Burlington BHL (Silver) 8 F8-BT/Jr Green Goblins (Green) GP Record Pts GF GA +/- T H A N K Y O U Coach of year Cordingley fired by Toronto Rock Oakville resident Troy Cordingley, named the National Lacrosse League's coach of the year a month ago, has been relieved of his duties by the Toronto Rock. Rock general manager Terry Sanderson made the announcement Friday. Assistant coach John Lovell has been promoted to the position of head coach. "Troy was an integral part of the success the Rock achieved over the last four seasons, including a championship in 2011," Troy Cordingley said Sanderson. "I felt the team needed new bench leadership to get the franchise back to another championship." Sanderson, an assistant coach for the past four seasons, also noted that he will step down from the bench as the team's defensive coach. During Cordingley's four-year tenure, the Rock reached the NLL championship game in his first two seasons behind the bench, winning in 2011. The Rock lost in the second round of the playoffs in 2012 and was ousted in the first round of this spring's playoffs. In each of those last two seasons, Toronto won the East Division title and in 2013 finished first overall in the NLL regular season standings. Cordingley has also played an active role within the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association. This past season, he oversaw the OMLA's rep coach development and also coached the peewee 1 Hawks box lacrosse team. His wife, Darlah, formerly served as the OMLA's vice-president of girls' lacrosse. Lovell was an assistant coach with Toronto for each of the past four seasons and was also an assistant to Terry Sanderson from 2004 to 2006 with the Rock winning the NLL title with Toronto in 2005 and in 2011 alongside Cordingley. He was also an assistant to Sanderson in 2002 with the Montreal Express. 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 5-0-1 4-2-0 2-3-1 0-6-0 4-1-1 3-0-3 3-2-1 2-1-3 2-3-1 2-3-1 2-3-1 0-5-1 5-1-0 5-1-0 4-1-1 3-2-1 3-3-0 3-3-0 0-6-0 0-6-0 5-0-1 2-3-1 2-3-1 1-4-1 5-0-1 5-1-0 3-2-1 3-3-0 3-3-0 1-3-2 1-4-1 0-5-1 (W3) (W1) (L1) (L6) (T1) (T2) (W1) (T1) (T1) (T1) (T1) (L2) (W1) (W3) (W2) (L1) (L2) (W2) (L6) (L6) (T1) (W1) (L1) (T1) (W5) (W2) (L1) (L2) (W3) (W1) (L4) (L5) 11 8 5 0 9 9 7 7 5 5 5 1 10 10 9 7 6 6 0 0 11 5 5 3 11 10 7 6 6 4 3 1 41 24 19 8 23 24 25 17 13 17 23 10 31 37 34 28 20 27 21 5 23 8 15 7 28 24 23 25 15 13 12 11 11 28 20 33 15 18 17 17 12 19 27 27 19 21 16 22 16 30 45 34 10 12 14 17 18 12 14 21 17 16 21 32 30 -4 -1 -25 8 6 8 0 1 -2 -4 -17 12 16 18 6 4 -3 -24 -29 13 -4 1 -10 10 12 9 4 -2 -3 -9 -21 This ad is courtesy of Proud Supporters & Oakville Strokers co-founder Pam Arnold (left), sharing a laugh with Liz Webster, was recognized Friday at Glen Abbey Community Centre for her 17 years of service as the club's activities co-ordinator. The Oakville Strokers, who featured three participants and four volunteers at their inception in 1995, now have close to 30 members and 40 volunteers. The organization's goal is to help stroke survivors revitalize their sense of independence, mobility and overall well-being while also affording primary caregivers time for themselves one day a week. The Strokers are operated by an advisory board of committed and long-serving volunteers in close co-operation with the Town of Oakville's recreation and culture department as well as Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital's physiotherapy department. | photo by Hannah Yoon -- Special to the Oakville Beaver
