WOSS student talks her way to two scholarships by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, June 6, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) Grade 12 student Melanie Zetusian has earned a $20,000 scholarship after taking first place in a national French-speaking competition. The youth won the recent Concours et Festival d'art oratoire, an annual French publicspeaking event for students in Grades 4-12 studying French as a Second Language. The competition was held in Ottawa in late May. "This entire speech competition has been a long journey from school and Halton competitions to provincials and finally to nationals, and knowing I succeeded at the top is a wonderful feeling," Zetusian said. The WOSS student headed to the national contest after taking first place in the Core French category of the le concours/festival d'art oratoire, an annual event organized by the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Parents for French and the Ontario Modern Language Teachers' Association. The provincials were held in early May at York University's bilingual campus Glendon College in Toronto. Students who placed first in the Grade 11-12 categories in the provincial competition then moved on to the nationals at the University of Ottawa. The title of Zetusian's speech was, Le sensationnalisme du crime dans les media. She As a result of her victories, Zetusian won a $20,000 ($5,000 per year) scholarship to the University of Ottawa. She also won $500, plus a $1,000 scholarship to York University at the provincials. "Competing at the nationals was a great opportunity to meet others from different provinces, and it allowed me to listen to speeches of different categories and French proficiency levels," Zetusian said. "As someone endeavouring to be a lawyer, I believe the skill of public speaking combined with proficiency in the French language will be tremendously beneficial." Melanie Zetusian spoke about how media may influence the perception of guilt, stressing everybody has the right to be judged without any prejudice. The orator was required to deliver at the national competition, the same speech with which she had won at the provincials.
