Connie Bach gave Oakville the lead with a home run in the top of the eighth inning (tournament games are seven innings, not nine) and Curtis Braun and Andrew Kotulak combined to turn a game-ending double play. Braun and Kotulak delivered run-scoring hits earlier in the contest as the A's built a 5-1 lead, but Strathroy tied the game in the fifth with a grand slam. Oakville's victory avenged a 5-4 loss to the Royals in Friday's opening game that put the A's on the verge of elimination in the double-knockout format. Oakville defeated the Port Lambton Pirates 5-4 and Merriton Alliance 4-0 on Saturday, then downed the Niagara Metros 5-3 Sunday morning to advance to the championship game. Jeff Jarockis finished the weekend with three home runs, two of them coming in the victory over the Metros. Bach delivered the decisive blow in that contest as well, stroking a two-run single that gave the A's a 5-2 lead in the top of the seventh. Josh Spagnoletti earned the victory on the mound, tossing a complete game despite having pitched three innings the previous day. Braun went the distance in the victory over Merriton, recording the shutout. He also delivered the game-winning single against Port Lambton, hitting a two-out line drive that cashed Matt Griffin. Kotulak drove in all of Oakville's runs in the opener, hitting a two-run homer and a two-run double. The A's are 5-4 in Central Ontario Baseball Association Major play, splitting games earlier this month against the Burlington Brants (a 12-2 loss) and the Brampton Battlecats (a 12-7 win). Oakville is scheduled to visit Niagara tomorrow (Thursday) and will be back home at Oakville Park Monday against Brampton (7:30 p.m.). The defending Grey Cup champions were initially scheduled to play the game at the University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium but relocated the contest to Aquinas late last week due to field conditions. The Argos also held their quarterback and rookie camp at Aquinas last Wednesday. The Holy Trinity Titans and King's Christian Collegiate girls' soccer teams were the lone local squads to advance past pool play in their respective OFSAA tournaments. King's, the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders and the Loyola Hawks did not advance to the playoff round in boys' soccer competition. The Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils girls' and boys' teams were both ousted in the second round at OFSAA rugby, as were the Aquinas girls. Soccer Holy Trinity was denied its third girls' AAAA soccer medal in as many years, eliminated in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 loss to Saint Paul after winning two of three games in pool play. The Titans, who won OFSAA gold last year at Pine Glen Park and earned provincial silver two years ago, defeated St. Edmund Campion 5-2 and Glebe Collegiate 4-1 before dropping a 2-1 decision to Pickering High in their final round-robin contest. Both Trinity's losses at the tournament in Niagara Falls came against eventual OFSAA medallists. Pickering won the gold, defeating Milton's Bishop Reding Royals 2-0 in the final, and Saint Paul collected bronze. King's Christian Collegiate's girls, making their first-ever OFSAA soccer appearance, were eliminated from medal contention at the A championships in Hanmer with a 4-3 quarter-final loss to Guide de Bres in extra time. Kristen Walraven, Ali Clouse and Emma Ostermeier scored for the Cavaliers, who were 1-1-1 in the opening round and advanced to the playoffs via a tiebreaker (goal differential). Meagan Cameron scored for King's in a 1-1 tie with Charlottenburgh & Lancaster; Meagan D'Ahoma, Florence Ischi and Ostermeier tallied in a 3-0 win over Confederation; and the Cavs lost their final round-robin game 2-0 to E.J. Lajeunesse, the eventual fourth-place finisher. The King's boys, defending A champions who were seeded third at this year's tournament in Timmins, scored just four goals in four games to finish with an 0-22 mark. Michael Panza had two of the Cavaliers' goals, with Anthony Sossa and Spencer Eisses adding the others. King's tied John Forster and St. Thomas by 1-1 scores while losing 2-1 to St. Charles and 3-1 to Waterford. Loyola lost just once in three roundrobin games at the AAAA boys' tournament in Toronto, but a 1-1-1 record was not enough to advance the Hawks into the playoffs after two teams in their divisions posted 2-1 marks. Matthew Santos and Andrew Martins scored in a 2-0 win over Our Lady of Mount Carmel; Kamil Tkaczuk tallied in a 2-1 loss to John Paul II; and Krystof Sznajder provided the Hawks' marker in a 1-1 tie with St. Peter. The Aquinas boys also lost once in the opening round, tying their other three games at the AA championships in Stratford, but did not qualify for the quartersee Rugby on p.19 Longhorns blanked in the Soo Outgained 528-76 in total yards of offence, the Oakville Longhorns were blanked 49-0 by the host Sault Ste. Marie Steelers Saturday in Northern Football Conference action. Oakville (0-2) was held to six first downs by the Steelers (2-1) and turned the ball over four times, three via interception. Sault Ste. Marie racked up 382 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Five of the Steelers' seven majors were scored on the ground, with the others coming on an interception return and a 15-yard pass. David Stopa (21 rushing yards on four attempts), Chris Hibbert (one catch for 24 yards) and Liston Bates (five tackles on defence) were the Longhorns' top statistical performers. Oakville will visit the Tri City Outlaws this Saturday in Waterloo. The Longhorns aren't scheduled to play at home again until Saturday, July 6, when they host the Toronto Raiders at Bronte Athletic Field.
