"When we first started, there were only one or two runs going on in Oakville and now there are more than 10 runs taking place." Pike said the committee went out into the community and asked what kind of event people would like. From the comments received, it was decided a family-friendly outdoor movie was the best choice. Admission to the movie day is free. There will be activities for children like large blow up slides and games before the movie and a barbecue. Popcorn, drinks, cotton candy and sausages will be available for purchase. The activities and barbecue begin at 7:30 p.m., with the movie starting at dusk. Pike said the community also had the opportunity to vote on the feature film for the evening with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial coming up the winner. Those who attend are advised to bring lawn chairs and perhaps blankets. Pets are permitted. "We're really hoping the community embraces this. We've had great feedback from the community saying this is something they would love. It's a free evening that also supports the hospital," said Pike. We have seen a steady, relentless decline since that time. My current problem is she wants to see her mother. She believes that her mother is wondering where she is and my mother doesn't know where to find her. I tried initially to explain that her mother passed on over 40 years ago and that she is watching over her from heaven. That just upsets her. I have also tried suggesting that she write her mother a letter and gave her an address to send the letter to but she doesn't actually write anything down. She just sits there with the address, writing pad and pen for several hours and then just walks away. These thoughts are creating a lot of anxiety in her and I just don't know what to do to help her. Scott: I think you may find it helpful, the next time this occurs, to shift your mother's focus. Rather than address your mother's desire to find her mother, try helping her to remember the special times she had with her mother. You might ask her about a certain event that took place in her childhood that included her mother or ask her about different aspects of her mother's life. David Troxel explains this approach in detail in his book, "A Dignified Life: The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimers Care." In addition, we do offer regular Alzheimers Education Seminars for family caregivers locally here in Oakville. If you are interested you can contact our office. At the same time, you may also want to speak to your family doctor to explore whether your mother's anxiety could be reduced through medications.
