Two youths named Oakville Family Ribfest's mascot This weekend's Oakville Family Ribfest (June 21-23) has a new name for its mascot thanks to the creativity of two children. The mascot was named Oakey through the Name the Pig contest held by Ribfest organizers. The winners of the contest, who came up with the name, are Oakville's Connor Maganti and Burlington's Victoria Hill. They had come up with the same name, though they spelled it differently. As winners, the two received a prize package that includes recognition in the Oakville Family Ribfest brochure, a Ribfest T-shirt and hat, and the opportunity to pose with the mascot outside the Ribfest Kids' Play Zone for a commemorative photo. And, most importantly, they also received coupons for dinner for four at Ribfest. The second annual ribfest is promising to be bigger and better than before. There will be more ribbers, more dining options and more entertainment for people of all ages, including an expanded Kids' Play Zone. This year's edition of the kickoff to summer will specifically feature much more for the tween crowd. There will be beer tents, vendors, and live and specialty entertainment. Ribfest will be held on the grounds of Oakville's Sheridan College on Trafalgar Road. It is organized by the Rotary Club of Oakville-Trafalgar. Proceeds will support a variety of local charities. Admission is free. Another customer of the restaurant, Chris McKeown, who was leaving after a lunchtime meal said he was unaware and surprised El Spero would be closing. "I'm actually surprised it's closing. I think it's one of the anchors of this mall. It's always extremely busy, so I'm surprised," he said. Another patron, Burlington resident Julie Jones, wrote to the Beaver saying her parents moved to the Bronte area more than 40 years ago and began eating at El Spero, a place that had great food, reasonable prices, convenience and great service. "The waitresses remember your name," she wrote. "I have literally eaten at this restaurant since I was a baby. I am now 37 years old with two children who are served by the same waitresses that served me as a child.
