Ribfest serving up something appetizing for all continued from p.1 Admission to ribfest is free. Inside there will be nine ribbers from which to choose, two more than last year. There will also be additional food vendors. Peden said that while there was plenty of entertainment for young children and adults last year, there was not enough for the `tween' crowd. Not so this time around. New on the `tween' scene A new Sports Zone will include a small skate park and basketball court. The basketball court will be off limits to the public Saturday afternoon because it is being used for a 3on3 basketball tournament. Teams of three can register for $75. Money raised will benefit local youth programs. Where there are ribs, there will surely be beer and at Ribfest there are three beer tents with seating available for 1,500. A sports lounge, previously open only for sponsors, will be available to everyone. Admission costs $10. Children under 12 get in free, but must be accompanied by an adult. On Friday night, the lounge will host the Grey Cup and Toronto Argonauts cheerleaders, and members of the Toronto Argonauts 1983 Grey Cup-winning team, Bob O'Billovich (head coach), Dan Ferrone and Don Moen. The lounge will also have a boom room, where people can check their golf swing and get pointers from professionals. "You can go and enjoy ribfest from a different point of view," Peden said. Last year, Ribfest raised $20,000 for Sheridan's Student Emergency Fund and $50,000 for the new Oakville hospital. Organizers have not decided what group will benefit this year. "We support anything that comes up in town. 100 per cent of it goes to those charities. We try to find the things that have fallen through the cracks," said Peden. Ribbers ready to rack 'em up Guelph-based ribber Dave Kent, owner of Silver Bullet Bar-B-Q, is returning to Oakville's ribfest this year. He owns two rigs, and one will be in Oakville while the other in Ottawa the same weekend. eral times. While people will be licking their fingers, they can also expect some quality local music at Ribfest. "They're all fabulous bands. It's going to be a great weekend of music and we just hope to see a lot of people come out," said entertainment committee chair Bruce Grant. There will be 15 musical acts, seven of which are returning from last year. There were approximately 60 bands vying for the spot and all bands have an Oakville connection, being either based in town or having members who live here. This year, the lineup was scheduled by genre and age group so people can tailor their visit. Friday night will feature several rock and pop/rock bands with Stereo Kid headlining. On Saturday, there will be some children's entertainment and pop musicians while Saturday evening will feature classic rock performances by The Kings, Jeffrey Brothers and Bare Blue Sea. Sunday will serve up jazz and blues music, with Flash Teeter and the Men from Mars as the closing act. For information, visit www. oakvillefamilyribfest.com. He barbecues several times a week at home, year round. His passion for ribs began as a young boy, when he first was allowed to start the charcoal and, eventually, grill the steaks at home. He later learned barbecuing was different in the U.S. from Canada. Here, people grill their food, while down south, they smoke it. "Once I got a taste for smoked meat, I just fell in love with it," he said. He bought into Silver Bullet Bar-B-Q nearly 10 years ago. The company's two rigs will attend 22 ribfests over the course of a summer. "I'm up at five in the morning. I'm turning on smokers and I'm pulling pulled pork out of the smokers and putting in ribs," he said. "I have a very dysfunctional sleep pattern in the summer. I'm in bed at midnight after we close at 11 and then I'm up at five again. I might catch a few more hours at seven in the morning or two in the afternoon. But that's it, I'm on the go." Last summer he won the People's Choice Award in Guelph and took third place in Burlington.
