The world's largest soccer tournament, the USA Cup this year attracted 700 teams from 25 countries. The Cobras did bring home some hardware, taking third place out of 49 girls’ teams in their age bracket, losing a heartbreaker penalty shoot-out in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champions. “We had a fantastic week. Great soccer, tough competition and a memorable team building experience for the girls,” said coach Keith Halbert. Playing in the top Cup Flight, the Cobras schedule called for two games per day for the first two days in round robin play. The Cobras came away with a perfect 4-0 record but had to fight for every victory against strong opposition. The Cobras edged a Virginia Beach team 2-1 in the first game (Vanessa Dumlao and Courtney Linton getting the markers), and next defeated a very physical Atlanta team , a former state champion, 2-0 (Karen Zmirak and Corey Morgan). On the second day in torrential rain, the Cobras defeated local teams Wayzata Thunder 2-0 (Zmirak and Laura Bandy) and Minnesota Kickers 2-1 (Zmirak and Leslie Wilkins). The wins guaranteed first place and a semifinal berth. The schedule also kindly gave the Cobras a two-day break so that the team could get its shopping fix at the Mall of America. In addition, the team took part in a soccer skills competition with Amanda Cicchini winning the ball juggling event by miles with 421 touches, and socialized with a boys’ team from Colorado, activities including a picnic and a friendly soccer game. In semifinal action, the Cobras were matched against the Colorado Rush. This renowned Colorado club, which draws players from all of Denver, is highly successful, and boasts many US national soccer championships in recent years. In a well-fought game, defences on both sides came out on top. Clear cut chances at either end were rare, and it was little surprise that the score stood at 0-0 after regulation and overtime play. In the subsequent penalty shoot-out, the Cobras unfortunately came up short but nevertheless turned in a great team effort on the day. The Cobras’ resilience and determination allowed them to take third place with a 1-0 win over a very talented New Hampshire Spirit club. Ally Skinner was on hand to knock in the sole strike. ‘The USA Cup was a banner event for the Cobras this year,” said coach Halbert. “I was delighted with the girls’ play and I know they have many great memories from this trip. “We have been fundraising throughout the spring, and I would like to thank the Oakville soccer community for making the trip possible through their tremendous support." The Oakville Cobras are sponsored by Wiberg Corporation, ACP Computer Technologies, Shoppers Drug Mart, Becton Dickinson, Bramham Bros., Dr. Richard Moreau, The Hair Salon, Bi-Way, Eager Beaver Cleaning Services, Fourth Line Auto, Rathbum Physio and Sports Medicine and Bradford Productions. It was all Eric Lamaze (see left photo) as the Hendervale Equestrian Complex, this past weekend, hosted the fifth of six stops in the $50,000 Grand Prix Olympic Trial Series. Virtually a lock for the upcoming Olympics, Lamaze finished first and second as two of his rides â€" Cagney and Millcreek’s Raphael â€" were the only two with clear rounds. And keeping it all in the family â€" or at least, soon to be family â€" third place went to his fiance, American Megan Johnstone, aboard Elfee. Sponsored by the Ontario tourist board • and televised on CTV SportsNet, the two local Halton riders did not manage a top-12 finish, and they were Heather Manbert (daughter of Hendervale owner Janet Manbert) and Milton's Ainsley Vince. Also on the Sunday, a 510,000 derby was held, and it was won by none other than Lamaze. A very busy Hendervale is now gearinig up for its annual Halton Valley Summer Classic August 9-13th. The competition includes the 525.0Q0 Gerling Canada Classic, 510.000 Open Welcome, SI0,000 Hunter Classic, 57,500 Junior Classic and concludes with the Sunday afternoon headliner, the 550,000 World Cup Qualifier at 2 p.m. Hendervale straddles Burlington, Milton and Oakville and can be reached at 827-2234.
