www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 1, 2013 | 4 Striking out in a new direction with musical variety continued from p.1 section of music genres. "It's kind of a departure from the old festival where it was more straight-ahead pop or rock and we might have had classic rock on the Friday night," said Bill Smith, chair of event organizing group Celebrate Oakville. "This one, we've really tried to be more diverse. A lot of the bands would be referred to as alternative-country. We never really had country before, but that's very popular these days." Along with the headliners, the festival will include The Treasures, Plants and Animals, Jane's Party, Devin Cuddy, Sam Cash, Lindi Ortega, Danielle Duval, Francesco, Tim Chaisson, Gentlemen and Husbands, and The Walkervilles. PEI-native Chaisson is no stranger to the festival scene. Growing up in a musical family that consists of more than 50 cousins who all play music, the 26-year-old grew up with the Celtic sound. He even played in a band that toured Celtic festivals. Branching out on his own, the pop-rockroots-country musician created a sound of his own. It was his fourth album, Broken Hearted Beat, released in 2009, that introduced him to the rest of Canada and which led him to a quartet of tours in Australia. Especially if there are any East Coasters kicking around Oakville -- I'm sure there's a few -- come up and say hello. I'll have a set I hope people will enjoy... It's kind of laid-back so you can sit and enjoy it and I'm just looking forward to meeting people in Oakville. Chaisson said when he performs with a full band, he ends up with a more rock-like sound, while if he's playing solo or with a backup, the sound is toned down and acoustic. In Oakville, it will be a mix of both as he'll alternate between guitar and fiddle, and have someone playing banjo and bass and another person on keyboards and organ. "Because there are no drums, it'll be a folkier vibe," Chaisson said of his performance at the Waterfront Festival. "It'll basically be my songs, but stripped down, with a more acoustic sound." He said he likes playing festivals because it helps introduce a musician to a new audience. "The whole festival scene is awesome," he said. "You're playing for people and then you get to see every other band that's playing that day or that weekend if you get to stay for the whole weekend." Chaisson said people should expect to see him in the audience once his set is finished. "Especially if there are any East coasters kicking around Oakville -- I'm sure there's a few -- come up and say hello," he said. "I'll have a set I hope people will enjoy... Aside from the main stage, there will also be a community stage featuring local talent on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to music, there will be gourmet food courtesy of an entire street of Ontario Food Trucks. Returning features to this year's festival include a vendor village showcasing local artisans, amusement rides, activities for all ages and local craft breweries. Smith expects a good turnout considering the event is free and the quality of musicians who will be performing. "A lot of the free festivals don't have the same profile of music that we're putting on so we're hoping this will attract a lot of people who will be happy to see these folks for free," he said. Organizers remind people parking will be limited and they should consider alternate transportation or to carpool to reduce traffic congestion. Oakville Transit will be offering shuttle buses to Coronation Park from the Oakville and Bronte GO stations. There will also be a bike corral where cyclists can leave their bikes for free.
