Youngster competes in Jr. world golf tourney Oakville youngster Barron Mundy recently finished 28th overall as an underage participant at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship at Torrey Pines near San Diego. Mundy, a five-year-old who will begin senior kindergarten at St. Andrew Catholic School this fall, shot rounds of 76, 70 and 78. He was one of five Team Canada members to play in the six-year-old division. The tournament featured representation from 58 countries. Tiger Woods (Mundy's favourite player), Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are among the past winners of the competition. Mundy, who regularly plays at Piper's Heath, currently sits fourth in the Canadian Junior Golf Association's Order of Merit in the boys' eight-and-under division. 19 | Wednesday, August 7, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Early javelin success for Athletiques member Despite having practiced the event just twice in her life, Athletiques International athlete Charissa Teal earned silver in javelin at the recent Minor Track Association provincial outdoor championships in Bramalea. Teal hurled the javelin 18.08 metres in her firstever official javelin competition. The 12-year-old hopes to follow in the footsteps of former Athletiques member Valerie Tulloch, who became the first Canadian woman to throw the javelin further than 60m in a bronze-winning performance at the 1995 PanAmerican Games. Teal also claimed gold in the 800m race walk at outdoor provincials, posting a time of 5:42.02 to win by more than 80 metres. Teal was edged by a few seconds in the event at the indoor championships April 6, when she was making her competitive debut.
