www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, August 28, 2013 | 14 Fall Registration Celebrating the start of its third year in the Joshua Creek neighbourhood, the Academy for Mathematics & English has helped students from various academic backgrounds and with different academic goals. The Academy uses a curriculum-based approach that is centered on improving a student's knowledge by filling their "knowledge gaps." The result is improved confidence and school grades. Students who have attended the Academy, have been able to get top marks, scholarships and admission into the university and program of their choice. Academy helps students achieve their academic goals "The Academy [for Math and English] was very helpful to my high school success for my Grade 11 and 12 years" - says Julie Pinizzotto, who attended the Academy for those years. She is a recipient of the Dr. Aikenhead award for academic excellence and isstarting at McMaster University in September. On average, students improve one to two grades within six months. Students are evaluated through quizzes and tests on a regular basis to ensure they have mastered the skills necessary before moving on to new material. Students work at their own pace on material designed specifically for them, based on a teaching program developed and improved more than 20 years ago by teachers. A parent of a Grade 8 student says that, "After seeing that our daughter has been excelling in Math and English since we signed her up at the Academy we have decided that we will continue to enroll her to keep giving her the added advantage." Courses are offered at all grade levels, from kindergarten to university/college in Math, English and Science. There are also a variety of workshops and prep/review programs including Essay Writing, EQAO and Grade 10 Literacy Test preparation and Grade 9 and Grade 12 Math preparation. Instructors work with a range of students, from public and private schools, IEP and enrichment backgrounds as well as standard and ALP/IB programs. The Academy recently launched ESL and FSL programs and have a TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) teacher on staff. Registration is ongoing throughout the year, and students are currently being enrolled for the fall. The Academy is located at the Upper Oaville Shopping Centre at 1011 Upper Middle Road East.
