Safety is top priority continued from p.1 The group noted no speed limit was posted along Sedgewick, despite the presence of Ecole élémentaire PatriciaPicknell. This meant most vehicles travelling along the street did so at a speed of at least 50 km/h instead of 40 km/h, which is the limit typically posted in Oakville's school zones. Berndt brought this oversight to the attention of Town staff and it was promptly rectified with 40 km/h signs posted. Town staff conducted an assessment of the street in 2012 and reported the roadway is still in need of traffic calming measures. "We are attempting to put it in. We held a public information centre meeting about this on May 7 and invited who we call directly affected stakeholders. So people who would actually front onto the devices," said Adam Bell, traffic technologist with the Town of Oakville. "There was some pushback from residents in the area and that necessitates us to bring forward a staff report to council." Bell said that report is currently scheduled to come before the Town's Community Services Committee Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Town Hall. He said municipal staff would recommend the introduction of the speed bumps at that meeting. Berndt said she plans to attend the meeting to argue for the speed bumps, which she says are needed to make the street safe for the children of its elementary school and daycare. "I think when there is a school and daycare, there should always be traffic calming. It is actually very surprising to me that speed bumps are not put in automatically when a school is built somewhere," she said. "It's all about safety. God forbid something horrible happen," said the Oakville mother. 5 | Thursday, September 5, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com In back, from left, Kate Labelle, Andrea Munroe, one-year-old Scarlett Hallman, Kerstin Berndt, Karen Meier, Kayla Meier, and in front, from left, Remi Labelle, 4, Adam Hallman, 5, Kjerstin Meier, 11, and nine-monthold Nathan Meier where residents are seeking the installation of speed bumps in front of the elementary school and daycare on Sedgewick Crescent. | photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog) Man wakes up to prowler by his bed by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff INJURED?
