Oakville residents urged to join together to help UWO continued from p.1 teeth and straining every muscle to get the bus rolling as supporters shouted encouragement. Oakville councillors Jeff Knoll, Marc Grant, Tom Adams and Alan Johnston, joined by four members of the Oakville Fire Department, gave it their best effort and succeeded in pulling the bus 40 metres in 32.37 seconds. In the end, however, the day belonged to the Mattamy Homes Supermen team that finished with a time of 26.68 seconds. "It's really heavy. It's hard to get started. Once you get it moving it's not too bad," said Paul Bolta, Mattamy Homes customer care coordinator. "Mattamy Homes has always been very much involved with the United Way. We did the bus pull last year and came in third place." The GE Gladiators came in second with an incredibly close time of 26.85 seconds while the Mattamy Homes Batmen team placed third with a time of 28.13 seconds. The Ford Uniforce team received the Spirit Award for its enthusiastic cheering and use of flags, team T-shirts and cowbells. The TD Canada Trust team was recognized as the top fundraiser. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton talked about the importance of the UWO, which invests in a support network of 33 social service agencies providing vital services to more than 30,000 residents. Oakville is only as strong as its residents make it by joining together and supporting the United Way, said the mayor. "(It) is one of the best things we do together to make Oakville the best place to live in the world," he said. "The last two years the United Way of Oakville has set wonderfully ambitious (fundraising) targets. They have raised the target by five per cent each of the last two years. That's a level of ambition that we didn't see previously in our town, but that is a level of ambition that is totally consistent with the character of all of us who live here. All of us in Oakville are ambitious, successful people who want the very best, not just for our families and ourselves, but for our community." Although Tuesday marked the official beginning of the 2013 campaign, fundraising is already off to what organizers called a `great start' thanks to `pacesetters' who have submitted donations and/or pledges prior to Sept. 1. Tim Johnston, UWO Campaign Cabinet 7 | Thursday, September 12, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The United Way of Oakville has set wonderfully ambitious (fundraising) targets. Mayor Rob Burton Oakville Chair and Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Canada talked about the importance of the campaign's success. "United Way Oakville has a profound impact on our community by ensuring an essential network of programs and services work together to achieve lasting positive change," said Johnston. "No other organization has the same depth, reach and history of making a profound difference in the lives of others." Last year, the UWO reached its campaign goal of $4.2 million.
