Speed cushions slow traffic in school zones continued from p.1 "Although physical traffic calming measures can be intrusive, they have proven to reduce speeds," said Bell in his report to the committee. "Speed cushions, in particular, are a highly- effective way to reduce speeding to below the 40 km/h speed limit in our elementary school zones; this has been demonstrated whenever they have been installed throughout the town." Bell also noted Sedgewick is the last street in town that is home to an elementary school and has no speed bumps. The staff recommendation would see two sets of speed bumps put in place, one to the east of the school and one to the west. Not everyone was happy with the proposal. Area resident Cameron Stuart expressed doubt the speed bumps would slow traffic on the street. He believes the school and area daycare need to be approached to get all the parents of children attending their facilities to obey the traffic laws. "On evenings when the weather is bad and parents are late picking up their children, I can stand out there and count the number of cars that come around the corner at breakneck speed, very dangerously and go right into the daycare. "Time is money for them and they are not 5 | Friday, September 13, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com I can categorically tell you the majority of traffic infractions, either speeding or failing to stop (at stop signs), are committed by parents attending either the daycare or Ecole Patricia Picknell. Cameron Stuart, resident going to pay that extra money to pick their child up five minutes later," Stuart said. Another resident suggested more police enforcement in the area to curb speeding rather than installing speed bumps. Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff said the police simply do not have the number of officers needed to conduct enforcement everywhere in Oakville where speeding is a problem. The resident also questioned whether speeding on the street was consistently so bad that speed bumps were the only solution. Matthew Corbett, who said he spoke on behalf of numerous local residents and parents of children attending the school, voiced support for the speed bumps. Corbett said the school has many students, which translates into just as many parents dropping their children off in front of the school and creating the need for a safe street for the children to cross. "We don't feel our case is out of the ordinary or unjustifiable," said Corbett. "It seems to me that, at the very minimum, the speed bumps would be a minor inconvenience to local residents, as there are different ways and alternative traffic routes that could be taken in order to not have to directly cross in front of the school and thereby not have to slow yourself down and drive over the speed bumps... Overall, we feel the safety and the lives of hundreds of children outweigh some of the nuisances of having to drive slower in school zones." Corbett said local residents may actually find the speed bumps beneficial as could result in fewer drivers cutting through the neighbourhood to bypass Rebecca Street. After all delegations were heard, Damoff called on Corbett to work with the parents and the school to further reduce speeding on Sedgewick. She noted the speed bumps on the street are long overdue.
