A record 87 men from various walks of life (no pun intended) and professions, including this reporter, sported pink heels in the wobbly march through Downtown Oakville to support the end of violence against women. Town councillors Max Khan, Tom Adams and Marc Grant joined Oakville firefighters, business owners, students and seniors in the day's fun activity, which was more challenging for some than others. There's definitely a balance factor to consider when walking in high heels. On multiple occasions, a poorly-planted step nearly resulted in my face meeting the pavement. Before the walk, I wondered why it was only a block. I don't wonder that anymore. Oakville Beaver reporter David Lea. | submitted photo A few days ago, I attended a friend's art show and remember her standing in heels for the three hours I was there. I didn't think much about it at the time, but I do now. I participated in Hope in High Heels because someone asked me and I realized there was no reason to decline and every reason to say `Yes.' I thought about all the amazing women in my life and the terrible statistics -- domestic violence affects one in four women, while one in three is sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Men have to be part of the solution to this problem and it needs to be understood, as Canadian rock and jazz icon Russ Little said, ending violence against women is a human rights issue, not a women's issue. We need to speak up and tell everyone and anyone, especially our children, that violence against women is not OK. It must be condemned and reported immediately. For me, walking in some not-terriblycomfortable pink heels for about a block was worth the effort if it helped spread the message. The Oakville and Burlington Hope in High Heels walks raised a combined total of more than $81,000 for Halton Women's Place, which supports women by providing critical shelter and counselling.
