Catholic trustees to revisit ban on HPV vaccine by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media Group 15 | Thursday, October 17, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Re-opening the debate over administration of the HPV (human papillomavirus virus) vaccine in Halton's Catholic schools will have to wait -- at least until next month. Discussion as to whether the Halton Catholic District School Board should reconsider its existing ban on allowing public health nurses into its schools to administer the HPV vaccine will not occur until early in November. Jonathan, Millwright Machinist graduate Burlington trustee John Morrison had intended to re-open the discussion on the issue at Tuesday night's board meeting, but was told he had not brought forward his intention at the correct time at the previous board meeting. HPV is a common virus that is usually spread during sexual activity through skinto-skin contact with an infected person. It can cause cervical and other cancers. The Ministry of Health says most HPV infections can be prevented with the HPV vaccine. The Halton Catholic board is the only one in Ontario that does not allow onsite HPV vaccinations of its students. The ban has been in effect since a previous board of trustees voted in June 2008 to stop allowing it to be administered to Grade 8 females at its schools effective September 2008. The procedural issues prompted Morrison to revisit the issue at the appropriate time during the Oct. 15 meeting and so now the HPV policy item will be on the agenda of the board's Nov. 5 meeting. Morrison is hoping to rescind the current Catholic school board policy that bans public nurses from administering the HPV vaccine on Halton Catholic board property. bankruptcy liquidation Pavilion Royale- 5165 road, Mississauga Otello's Banquet & Dixie Conference Centre, (corner Eglinton AvenueOakville East) 2273 Royal Windsor, Get hands-on training that pays.
