"For a long time, I felt pretty guilty about it," he said of getting his transplant so soon after being on the list. "As part of the transplant process you go to physiotherapy three times a week with others on the list and you build camaraderie and a support system with others waiting for lungs and some have been waiting for a year, two years, and here I show up and two weeks later I get them." BERMEX FACTORY AUTHORIZED SALE! FROM OCT. 26 - NOV. 1 GUARANTEED CHRISTMAS DELIVERY 25% OFF For a long time, I felt pretty guilty about it (getting new lungs). As part of the transplant process you go to physiotherapy three times a week with others on the list and you build camaraderie and a support system with others waiting for lungs, and some have been waiting for a year, two years, and here I show up and two weeks later I get them. Robert Alexander-Carew Oakville resident * But his doctors assured him he was much sicker than anyone else on the list and he received his new lungs when he did for a reason. "Up until that point (the transplant date), I was in denial at how bad off I was," he said. After a 20-hour surgery and 21 days spent in hospital in recovery, Alexander-Carew returned home on July 21, 2012 and says he took his first real trip out of the house on Aug. 15, 2012. "After three months, I started feeling back to normal and then went back to work four months after," he said. Tethered to his anti-viral, antifungal and anti-bacterial medications, Alexander-Carew will need to be on that treatment for the rest of his life to maintain his level of health. But the married father of two says he has become as active as he was before his diagnosis, cycling with his two daughters, Julia and Marisa, as well as returning to taking cycling classes twice a week. Riding for Pulmonary Fibrosis Friday's fundraiser will see participants ride 18 stationary bikes at 45-minute intervals at the top of every hour between 3-9 p.m. "Each segment is led by an Oakville cycling instructor who will make it fun and immersive for the riders," said Alexander-Carew. Last year's event had the maximum 108 riders participate and raised $25,000 -- two things Alexander-Carew says he wants to see happen again this year. The proceeds from the inaugural event funded a full-time respirologist at Toronto General Hospital who is dedicated to researching PF . This year's funds will go to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and the Interstitial Lung Clinic in Toronto, which researches lung diseases and develops new ways of diagnoses. Those interested in signing up for the fundraiser can email ra-c@ live.com. Volunteers are needed for set up and tear down. The family-friendly event will also feature a bouncy castle, facepainting and craft tables for children, as well as a raffle and food donated by local grocery stores and bakeries.
