YMCA Peace Week gears up to empower people by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, November 15, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com When Cheryl Perera first learned about child prostitution for a high school project, she says the shock made her want to find out more about the issue and to help. At age 20, she founded the non-profit, volunteer-run OneChild in 2005, to empower a movement of youths to take action against child sex slavery and work to raise awareness, provide child advocacy and survivor support. "As a young person, I felt like I could do something and wanted to do something, but I didn't know who I could go to for help to provide me with the skills and the know-how, so I decided to start my own organization to give young people the opportunity to take action on this issue," said the 28-year-old. Perera will provide a motivational message as speaker at the annual YMCA Community Breakfast for Peace Thursday, Nov. 21, one of several events planned for the organization's Peace Week (Nov. 16-23). "The idea of talking about my experience and OneChild is really about peace education," said Perera. "Essentially teaching and giving young people the skills, talents and knowledge to go out and find that issue that's important to them and motivate them to become agents of peace in their own mind and around the world." YMCA Peace Week will be recognized in communities across Canada, starting Saturday, the community with little or no resources." The breakfast runs from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd. Tickets cost $20 per person or $180 for a table of 10, and can be purchased online at www.ymcaofoakville.org or at the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA, 410 Rebecca St. A speaker tour, featuring Perera, and youth expo will also take place on Nov. 21 at St. Ignatius of Loyola and White Oaks secondary schools. Other events at the Oakville YMCA, include: · Second annual Candlelight Walk for Peace -- Monday, Nov. 18 from 5:45-8:30 p.m. With Cheryl Perera and will offer activities for all ages to explore peace from personal, local and global perspectives. "World peace seems like an overwhelming idea, but it can start with one person's ideas and actions and lead to positive and lasting change for their community and communities around the world," said Kyle Barber, president and CEO of the YMCA of Oakville. "There is incredible peacemaking work being done by Oakville residents." The highlight of Peace Week, locally, is the Community Breakfast where the 2013 YMCA Peace Medallions will be presented to one youth, adult and group peacemaker who has "demonstrated their commitment to building peace in a limited number of candle luminaries, participants are asked to bring flashlights for the walk. · Yoga for Peace -- Tuesday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 21 from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Participants of all ages are welcome for the free, drop-in yoga session and are asked to being a yoga mat if they have one. · Peace Rocks battle of the bands concert -- Saturday, Nov. 23 from 4:30-10 p.m. It is held in partnership with the Oakville Public Library.
