"It's different; I really want kids to be exposed to classical music," said owner Ixchel Suarez. "I talk about the Baroque period and the Romantic period." Nowadays, there's a new location for the studio, plus a new exhibit is underway. The fourth annual display is continuing to Sunday (Nov. 24) at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre Main Gallery, 2302 Bridge Rd. "We do the exhibit every year and we learn to be critical about ourselves," said Suarez, an award-winning tapestry artist. "We learn to accept and have good comments in a way that we can all grow together. "There has never been a mean comment," she noted. "We learn to respect and observe." Suarez enjoys telling stories about music and art to her students. Besides classical, she plays jazz and African music during her classes. Her father was a symphony conductor and she studied ute, guitar and piano growing up in Mexico. "It goes back to my parents. I do the playlists with my mom (Sylvia Martinez), who was a pianist," she recalled. "My father (Manuel Suarez) was one of the most renowned violinists in Mexico City. I grew up in that life." But she became a successful tapestry artist who exhibits widely. She founded Oakville Arts Studio in 2007, running it from her home near Eighth Line. This past September, Suarez moved the business to a commercial plaza at 2530 Sixth Line, in the River Oaks community. "I decided to do it a bit more formally," she said. "I started spreading the word." Her sister Myriam is the Early Childhood Education art instructor there for children aged threeseven. Suarez teaches all those who are older. While the majority of her charges are kids, art classes are taught for all ages. Suarez said there's a strong focus on sketching before the students can use paint brushes. "I really want them to have a good sense of using their hands before painting," she said. Tapestry, bre arts, sculpture, modelling, basket weaving and more are taught. Suarez has earned numerous honours, including the 2012 visual arts award from the Oakville Arts Council. She was also among three artists who represented Mexico when the country's 200th anniversary was marked at the Mexican consulate in Ottawa.
