www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, November 20, 2013 | 18 Jon Kuiperij Sports Editor sports@oakvillebeaver.com Sports "Connected to your Community" Ups and downs continue for young Oakville Blades The Oakville Blades continue to be consistently inconsistent. After extending their winning streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over the North York Rangers Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, the Blades were whipped 8-1 Sunday in North York and 6-1 Monday in Cobourg. Twenty-two games into the Ontario Junior Hockey League season, Oakville has already had a pair of threegame losing skids to go with two winning streaks of four or more games. Overall, the team is 12-10 despite having been outscored 84-70 and allowing an average of 38.3 shots per contest. "We're a developmental team, and we want to use young Oakville players," Blades coach Kevin Gomes said earlier this month. "Even our veteran guys are still young (17 and 18 years old). That will account for the ups and downs." Kris Bennett, Dalton Bew and Kamil Tkaczuk scored goals for the Blades Friday after North York opened the scoring 6:22 into the game. Evan Buitenhuis stopped 34 of 35 shots to record the win. The Rangers got their revenge Sunday, beating Buitenhuis on eight of their 25 shots in the contest. John Carpino and Zachary Fung each recorded hat tricks for North York. Greg Campbell scored a power-play goal in the second period for Oakville's lone marker. Monday, the host Cougars scored five unanswered goals after Oakville's Ryan Garvey scored to tie the game 1-1 in the first period. Buitenhuis was barraged with 47 shots but managed to keep the Blades within two goals midway through the third period before Cobourg broke the game open. Oakville returns to action this Friday (Nov. 22) when it hosts the 9-16-1 Mississauga Chargers at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. The Blades will also be home to the Wellington Dukes -- who are last in the East Division despite a 14-6-3 record -- Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oakville Titans running back Michael Pastorek (fourth from left) carries the ball downfield during Saturday's 28-0 win over the Southeast Kodiaks in the Mississauga Football League peewee championship game. | photo by Iain Colpitts -- Metroland Media Group Peewee Titans win football title in shutout fashion by Iain Colpitts Metroland Media Group Winning the Mississauga Football League peewee championship was enough to make MacKenzie Dowd happy. The fact that the Oakville Titans running back ran for two touchdowns and collected more than 150 rushing yards Saturday afternoon was icing on the cake. Dowd scampered for a 90-yard major, then added a 75-yarder to lead the Titans to a 28-0 win over the Southeast Kodiaks in one of four championship games at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre last weekend. "We always worked as hard as we could through practice," Dowd said. "We fought really hard to get to this day." Michael Pastorek ran for a three-yard TD while Greg Campbell powered the ball in from the one-yard line to account for the other touchdowns for the Titans, who finished first in the regular season with a 6-2 record. The Kodiaks also went 6-2 in the regular season but finished second in the standings after losing twice to the Titans. Titans coach Jason Gilbert said Saturday's game was a lot closer than the score indicated. Oakville went into the fourth quarter with a 7-0 lead and was stopped shy of the end zone by a couple of Mississauga goal-line stands. "We had a little bit more luck against them in previous games, but they came ready to play today and gave us a good battle," Gilbert said. "I love what their coach was doing by just trying to jam the ball up our throats and play power football." Meanwhile, the Streetsville-Meadowvale Stallions recovered from an early deficit to beat the Titans 39-6 in Saturday's bantam final. Malik Gardner led the Stallions with a pair of rushing touchdowns from 32 and 23 yards out. Alba Aidan and Shaan Bikhari recorded short-distance rushing majors while Nathan Longley found the end zone on a 20-yard interception return for the Stallions. Samuel Hawthorne scored the only Titans touchdown on the first possession of the game, after Mitchell Goldstine set him up with a kickoff return to the Stallions five-yard line. OAKVILLE BLADES VS.
