www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 28, 2013 | 14 Lockwood a driving force in Oakville for 30 years by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver Jay Lockwood has been a driving force in Oakville for three decades. The owner of Lockwood Chrysler Fiat recently celebrated the dealership's 30th anniversary with family, friends, employees and local dignitaries at a special on-site gathering. Lockwood's career in the automotive industry began in the early 1970s after he purchased Tiger Town Auto Sales in Hamilton. His involvement with Chrysler started several years later when he purchased 50 per cent of Woodstock Chrysler with his father. "My grandfather started Lockwood Motors in Hamilton in 1945, making me a third-generation car guy. Cars just seem to be in our blood. It's hard to believe that all of this started in a small used-car lot in Hamilton," said Lockwood. "I don't know where the 30 years went, but I do know that I've worn out 85 pairs of shoes walking this hallway." On Oct. 4 1983, Lockwood purchased the MacCallum and Wilson Motors dealership on Kerr Street and renamed it Lockwood Chrysler. Two years later, the Oakville company moved to its current location on Wyecroft Road. Since then, Lockwood Chrysler has expanded its operations to include a showroom, Fiat studio and a parts and service centre. "I've been fortunate enough to live each day working in a field that I love. The marriage between Chrysler and I has been great. Mayor Rob Burton noted Lockwood's involvement in the community as an avid supporter of local organizations such as the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, the Salvation Army and Halton Crime Stoppers, to name a few. In recognition of Lockwood's support, Burton proclaimed Oct. 19 as Jay Lockwood Day in Oakville. "When I think about all of the things that Jay does for this town, I can't help but be both proud and grateful to him," said Burton. "(He) is a three- time recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for Rotary (Club), the highest honour the club can bestow upon a person." Chrysler Canada senior manager Joe Orlando described Lockwood as one of Chrysler's "most detail-oriented, giving and charismatic" dealers. "Jay's time with Chrysler Canada has been an interesting journey, one of many twists and turns, but one of many accomplishments and achievements. Jay is truly well-respected across this country within the Chrysler corporation," said Orlando. "I know Jay's generosity has been felt across this entire town." Orlando said Lockwood has never shied away from his generous side, as he continues to support Oakville minor hockey, select charities and the new hospital. "I've known and worked with you for (more than) 20 years. Your commitment to your customers and employees has been evident in the way you do your business," said Orlando. "You've been an asset, not only to the citizens of Oakville, but also to Chrysler Canada." Leasing manager Mark Kusiewucz has worked with Lockwood for more than 12 years. He said the owner "always knows" how to unite his employees during times of economic turmoil. "During these years, we shared many good times, challenged issues and (we) rode the ups and downs that this industry is known for," said Kusiewucz. "Jay creates an environment of us running our own business and this instills accountability for our actions."
