www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 5, 2013 | 10 Vigil at Sheridan Dec. 6 to speak out against abuse and violence On Dec. 6, 1989 an armed man entered the École Polytechnique in Montreal and separated the male and female students. He ultimately shot and killed 14 female students and wounded another 14 victims. The shooter's academic application had been turned down by the college and he blamed "feminist" women for taking up classroom space. This year, Sheridan College, in conjunction with Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) of Halton, will hold a vigil at the Trafalgar campus at 2 p.m., tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 6). It will commemorate murdered women and commit to continuing the work to end violence against women. Although 14 years have passed, the issue of gendered violence remains a significant concern, according to SAVIS of Halton. "Gendered violence is an issue of power and control that reinforces inequalities between men and women," said SAVIS executive director Kathryn Baker-Reed. While SAVIS of Halton provides services to all survivors of violence (women, men and members of the trans community), anniversaries such as Dec. 6 provide opportunity to raise awareness that partner abuse and sexual violence happens disproportionately to women, according to SAVIS. If anyone needs information or support, they can call 905-825-3622, 1-877-268-8416, or the 24-hour support/crisis line at 905-875-1555. SAVIS offers free counselling for individuals, support groups, and an extensive anti-violence/ safety education program for businesses, agencies and community groups.
