When Typhoon Haiyan struck the island nation Nov. 8, it killed more than 4,000 people and destroyed many cities and towns, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. After hearing about the catastrophic devastation, Oakville resident and mother Suzanne Wickett said she was inspired to take action. "There was an article last week where a Filipino grandmother was quoted as saying, `We need help,'" said Wickett. "I was just thinking about it that night and the next morning, and praying about it and I had the idea of contacting the local neighbourhood centre." Wickett said her fundraiser idea was well-received by the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre staff. see Donations on p.5 The Peter Gilgan Family YMCA in Oakville joined others across Canada in celebrating YMCA Peace Week. A slate of related activities included Monday night's second annual Candlelight Walk for Peace -- an opportunity for participants to re ect on what peace means to individuals, the community and world.
