Salvation Army, KSM meets campaign goals by David Lea and Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Friday, January 3, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville residents dug deep for those in need this holiday season, contributing more than $111,000 to Salvation Army Oakville's Kettle Campaign and $300,000 to the Kerr Street Ministries (KSM). Overcoming what initially looked like a $6,000 shortfall of its fundraising goal, Salvation Army Oakville Community and Family Services Co-ordinator Aisha Chaney said the local charity has raised enough funds from its annual holiday campaign to support its programs and services offered to those in need within the community thanks to last minute help from Catch Hospitality Group, which owns local restaurants Cucci, Plank, Tavolo and The Firehall Cool Bar Hot Grill. "We can breathe a sign of relief now that we have what we aimed for and we have a little extra too," she said, noting how every year it is a challenge to get enough volunteers to support the campaign, which ended Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). Chaney thanked all the individuals, groups and businesses who offered "countless hours and overwhelming support." "All the little efforts made a huge difference in the end," she said. The Fairway Hills Luminary Event, which occurred Christmas Eve, helped raise $5,324 for Salvation Army Oakville. The special event has been held annually for 20 years and sees Fairway Hills lit up with dazzling outdoor decorations and luminary candle lanterns in support of the Salvation Army. The funds raised during the campaign not only support the Salvation Army's Christmas programs, but it also supports services throughout the year like its food bank operations and sending kids to camp over the summer, said Chaney. see `Christmas on p.8 The Fairway Hills community continued its 20-year tradition of supporting The Salvation Army with luminary candle lanterns, Christmas caroling and donation collection for the organization's Kettle Campaign.
