The Eagles are 8-1 this season in Halton league play, and 4-1 against fellow Tier 1 opponents. Abbey Park likely would have had a strong team last season as well, Rinaldo said, if their campaign hadn't been wiped out due to the public teachers' withdrawal of extra-curricular activities. Most of the students who would have played last year graduated in the summer, leaving a fresh crop of incoming players. "Most of our players have played double-A, and a couple of them have played triple-A," Rinaldo said. "Usually, they don't regret the move (from rep to high school, since the Halton high school league does not allow rep players)." Joel Matson -- who had a hat trick against Nelson -- and Cox paced the Eagles with five goals each in the tournament. Herniak added four, Chris Boushy and Foster Cuomo each had three, Jackson Hulbert and Douglas contributed two, and Ian Mason, Cam McKenzie, Cole Vincent and Connor Chambers also tallied. Other members of the Eagles are Will Lawlor, Colin Semple, Tyler Hipple, Brandon Wood, Greg Piper, Scott Schiffner, Alex Harshaw, Adam Demaine, Colin Clarke and Stefan Antonakos. -- Jon Kuiperij "Connected to your Community" Eagles fly high at Bur Bear Abbey Park wins tourney's elite division for first time Once the Abbey Park Eagles got rolling at the Bur Bear, they were difficult to stop. Winless after two games at the annual Burlington high school boys' hockey tournament, the Eagles won their next four contests by a combined score of 23-10 to win the Gold Pool (elite division) championship for the first time in school history. Abbey Park clinched the title with a 5-3 win over Mississauga's Our Lady of Mount Carmel Saturday afternoon at Burlington's Appleby Ice Centre. Evan Herniak (two), Spencer Douglas, Alexandre Bisson and Alex Cox scored in the gold-medal game, while goaltender Matthew Barth recorded the victory and was named MVP . "This is a very determined bunch," said longtime Eagles coach Larry Rinaldo. "They just seem to get hungrier as they go." Abbey Park tied both its games on Thursday, the opening day of the tournament, playing to 3-3 draws with Sudbury St. Charles and Ancaster. The Eagles then routed Lorne Park 7-3 to advance to the playoff round, where they doubled up the Nelson Lords 4-2 and hogtied the Corpus Christi Longhorns 7-2. "We just wanted to be friendly on the first day," Rinaldo quipped. "We weren't satisfied with the ties, so that just made us a little hungrier."
