During the campaign, commuters are able to take advantage of www.CarpoolZone.ca, a free, online carpool matching system from the Smart Commute Halton program. "Halton Region's Smart Commute Halton program, in partnership with Metrolinx, reinforces the Region's commitment to supporting and preserving vibrant communities and the natural environment," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "With 20 Halton business members, Smart Commute Halton is reducing the number of cars on our roads, preventing greenhouse gas emissions and saving people money by encouraging employers to take advantage of the CarpoolZone. ca program. If driving is the best option for your commute, try carpooling to save money, time and reduce your impact on the environment. Carpool Zone makes it easy to find a ride match and to track the impact of your commuting habits." Carr said Smart Commute Halton member businesses, in 2013, eliminated 487,388 km of road travel (equivalent to more than 12 times around the world); prevented 105,827 kg of greenhouse gas emissions (the weight of more than 9.5 school buses); and saved almost $314,533 in commuter costs.
