The Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference champs defeated three of their first four opponents at OFSAA before being swept in both the semifinal and bronze-medal games, settling for fourth place and antique bronze. Those final two matches were played without Sidney Newton, who Red Devils coach Abdel Samiky calls the team's "strongest player", as she had to attend a tournament with her rep club. OT was also crippled by injuries to Samantha Creighton, Julia Kreps and Jennifer Morratus. "Next year, I'll have extra players, take more precautions. There are things you can't predict. Some of our players who had injuries played the weekend before in the (United States with their rep team), and drove from the States to Barrie," said Samiky, adding he understands players' priorities lie with their rep teams. "I took only 12 players this year. Sixteen would be more helpful, with more than one setter and more than one libero." OT's playoff losses were to Bishop Allen (16-25, 16-25, 10-25) in the semifinals and to Sinclair (20-25, 18-25, 8-25) in the bronzemedal game. Blakelock's Madeline Jeffrey added a gold at this week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations swim championships in Brantford. Akdeniz won the men's 15-and-over 100-metre backstroke by 0.39 seconds, finishing in 1:05.93. He missed gold in the 50m butterfly by four onehundredths of a second, Caroline Lauder settling for second. Lauder earned gold in the women's 15-and-over 100m freestyle, posting a time of 1:02.81 to win by 0.17 seconds. Her silver came in the 50m butterfly, nine one-hundredths of a second behind the first-place finisher. Jeffrey won the women's 15-and-over 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:23.58, winning by 0.63 seconds. Other notable finishers at OFSAA included Iroquois Ridge's Daniel Xia (fourth, men's 15-and-over 100m breaststroke) and Jeffrey Wang (fifth, men's 14-and-under 50m breaststroke), Appleby's Maddy Harrison (fourth, women's 15-and-over 100m backstroke) and St. Thomas Aquinas's Philip Mirek (fifth, men's under-20 100m para freestyle). Oakville's win avenged a 21-25, 21-25 loss in pool play to Niagara Frontier, the Thunder's only loss at the tournament. The Thunder defeated teams from Rochester, Niagara, Waterdown and Bloomfield, NY., in its other games. Members of the Thunder are Simon Hardenne, Mikaila Patrick, Lauren Duffy, Hazel Brown, Megan Munro, Kaleigh Jeffrey, Kerry MacGregor, Mimi Cepic, Linnea Campbell, Teaghan Hignett, Valeria Granda, Cameron Merrigan and Julia Scott. Eagles pound Brebeuf in GHAC boys' hockey final The Abbey Park Eagles won the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference boys' hockey title with a 8-1 rout of the St. Jean de Brebeuf Braves Wednesday in Hamilton. Abbey Park and Brebeuf will both compete in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA/AAAA championships March 18-21 in Oakville. The Eagles won their first Halton Tier 1 title in 10 years last Friday when they defeated the Holy Trinity Titans 3-1 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Little League organizers preparing for 2014 season This winter's seemingly never-ending snow and cold temperatures aren't stopping organizers of Oakville Little League from preparing for the 2014 youth baseball season. More than 100 teams across nine divisions are expected to participate in the upcoming campaign. "We're obviously very pleased with the participation numbers we have seen so far and expect to see another strong and exciting year," said OLL president John Sweeney. "We are also pleased that so many more children and families are receiving the benefits of participation in Little League baseball." In addition to its house league program, OLL also offers an all-star program at the minor (10-under), major (12U), intermediate (13U), junior (14U), senior (16U) and Big League (18U) levels. All-star teams will attempt to qualify for the 2014 Little League World Series by participating in playdowns that progress through the district, provincial and national levels. Every all-star player must also participate in OLL 's house league program. OLL 's park on Cornwall Road will be buzzing this summer as the league hosts the district house league tournament, the minor and major all-star tournaments, the Whitecaps Tball tournament and the Adam Fedoruk memorial competition.
