The collection of sterling silver and gemstone jewelry will be a part of the Society's 2014 Student Art Show, which shines a spotlight on artwork done by adult and children in painting, drawing, mixed media, pottery, jewelry, photography, digital arts and mixed media. A reception will be held Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Erskine, who has been teaching at the Oakville Art Society, 560 Bronte Rd., for the past six years, said it's nice to have an event that highlights the effort and hard work students have put into their projects. As a teacher, the Oakville artist said, it's rewarding to see how her students have taken one of her original concepts and stretched it into a creation of their own. She added their artistry and skills have really shone through. "What they've turned out this session is just remarkable," said Erskine, who has been teaching both beginner and intermediate jewelry classes since 2011. She noted many students rose to the challenging task of working with wires and sheets of metal to build and construct a scene. "The metals sometime dictate what you're doing," said Erskine, who has been creating karat gold and sterling silver jewelry, accessories and other items for 37 years. She added although there can be certain limitations, one can be unlimited in imagination. Noting how many students had to modify their plan and worked through challenging problems, she said, "a little bit of patience and perseverance and believing things will work out" paid off. Student Judith Dobbs says the learning experience and ability to bounce ideas off her classmates and Erskine is what she loves the most about taking the jewelry classes at the Oakville Art Society. She initially took the beginners jewelry class in 2011 after hearing about it from a friend and has kept at it because of the skills she's been able to obtain. It's also a night out to be social, do what you enjoy and learn in a positive environment, she added. "It's a good atmosphere in the class," said Dobbs, a former Oakville resident who moved to Mississauga two years ago. "If you're really stuck on a project and don't know where to go with it, you can bounce off ideas and suggestions." Dobbs' two-inch oval pendant will be among the works being displayed at the art show. It shows an underwater fish theme. In the past, she's also created earrings, rings and necklaces, many of which have been given to her family in England. She noted how her mother has already called `dibs' on the pendant featured in the show. "It's a nice thing you can give to someone and know they'll appreciate the thought and time to put into it," she said, adding not everyone can make handmade jewelry and that she's happy she's been able to develop the skill.
