Blakclock. the lone Oakville senior football team still in contention for a Halton title, will take on Bishop Reding this Friday while Burlington Central will visit Milton District. Kickoflf in both games is slated for 2 p.m. (See 'High School' page 03) Not quite 10 years ago. in September 1995. there was a small story in the Oakville Beaver inviting elite athletes to come out to the Burloak Canoe Club. One of them was Adam van Koeverden. He decided to give paddling a shot. And now. after a youth spent in faithful pilgrimage to Sixteen Mile Creek, he's one of the fastest paddlers in the world, and definitely on the early list of contenders to win a medal at next year's 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. A Loyola grad, he is a kinesiology student at McMaster University, but has put his studies on hold for this school year in order to concentrate on the Olympic Games. He is coming off a break-through year, highlighted by a stunning silver medal in the K-1.000 metre race at the world championships in midSeptember in the U.S. Only slightly less important, he also finished sixth in the K-500m race.
