www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, April 30, 2014 | 8 Hudak tells Chamber wage freeze could save $2B by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) leader Tim Hudak is adamant that creating more jobs is the change the province needs to build a better Ontario. A luncheon was hosted at the Holiday Inn by the Oakville Chamber of Commerce and attended by more than 200 people Friday. During his remarks, Hudak said Ontario needs "a fresh start" and he has a "bold plan" to get that job done. Speaking about the Ontario PC Party's Million Jobs Plan, Hudak highlighted what he believes will help generate one million jobs over eight years. The first order of business, would be to curb government spending, balance the budget and make sure the Province spends within its means. "Where do we start? We start with an across-the-board wage freeze for all of us in government, including us MPPs," said Hudak. He noted such a freeze over the next two D I S T I N C T I V E L A D I E S FA S I O N S Saturday, May 3rd 8am-Noon MORNING MADNESS SALE storewide All Sales Final 30%OFF Hopedale Mall, 905-465-3499 All Sales Final years could save Ontario $2 billion a year. The would-be Ontario premier said he'd also like to see what he calls a more affordable energy plan in the way of natural gas, nuclear power and hydroelectricity rather than solar power or wind energy. Replacing the "corporate welfare that rewards the well-connected with a broad-based tax reduction for everybody to succeed" is also part of the Million Jobs Plan, said the politician. Hudak's remarks were followed by a question-and-answer period where local business leaders sought his ideas on how skilled trades jobs should be handled, the Ontario Municipal Board, an Ontario-made pension plan and privatizing the LCBO and beer and wine sales in retail and convenience stores. Hudak said rules on how skilled trade apprentices are trained be more like some of the western provinces where there is a lower ratio of skilled journeymen to apprentices. He said he believes the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) role as "referee" is important. The Province sets the rules OMB officials follow so residents should question those rules, said Hudak. With regards to an Ontario-made pension plan and liquor-related questions, he responded that creating jobs is his top priority and his focus is delivering the Million Jobs Plan.
