Lunafest will help SAVIS give hope to those in crisis continued from p.1 "I remember when a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a friend at a park. The police told her she shouldn't have gone to the park." As SAVIS celebrates its 25th anniversary, its executive director Kathryn Baker-Reed says attitudes are changing. Today, police officers train with SAVIS to learn how to respond to assault survivors. "We have come a long way, but there is still an awful lot of work to be done. It might not be as overt, but it is still very much a blaming experience. But we held 354 education events last year, so people are hearing and are brave enough to say `we have a problem here and need help.'" Besides education, SAVIS provides individual counselling for women and men who are survivors of childhood abuse, a 24-hour support line (905-875-1555), drop-in, elder abuse awareness and youth outreach programs, and eLearning curriculum for all Grade 9 students in the Halton District School Board. SAVIS also provides group and individual counselling at the Vanier Centre for Women, a correctional facility. "So many of those women are without hope. SAVIS in a small way gives some of them hope they are not alone," says board member Terri Lawson. LeFrancois adds she has yet to meet a woman at Vanier who is not a survivor of some kind of abuse. Lawson says that while the crisis phone line is still busy, the organization added a texting cell phone to accommodate youths and the hardof-hearing. SAVIS is also looking into possibilities for online support. "It's not as simple a world as it used to be in how we find clients and how they find us," Lawson said. "We need to evolve. Every month at our meetings, we talk about what's changing and how to get to people differently." SAVIS is looking into having a presence in more communities. Right now, it has satellite locations in Burlington and Milton, but hopes to open in Halton Hills, Georgetown and Acton. Although Baker-Reed says she wishes she could put herself out of work in a world where there is no need for SAVIS, she is proud of the help the organization provides. "We are small in square footage, but mighty." SAVIS is always looking for volunteers. For information, visit savisofhalton.org, email savis@savisofhalton. org or call 905-825-3622.
