NDP to fund more staff continued from p.4 While the NDP would maintain that rebate, Spohr added that his party would also freeze post-secondary tuition rates and eliminate interest on student loans. Chudleigh, who blamed Liberal policies for blocking a possible expansion of Wilfrid Laurier University to Milton, said his party would get rid of the tuition rebate as part of its budget balancing plans. "Having students graduate and not have a job to go to seems redundant," he said. "Things have to change if we are going to become the economic engine of the country again." Student loans will ensure all qualified students have access to post-secondary education, said Chudleigh. He added that tuition rates should be lower for students studying math, science and engineering -- disciplines that drive prosperity and quality of life. Along with eliminating the tuition rebate, Chudleigh added, the PCs' austerity plans would freeze teacher salaries for two years, and introduce a "modest increase" in class sizes from 23 to 26 students per teacher. While other parties are "denigrating education workers," Spohr said the NDP would respect and support teachers during a collective bargaining process. He added that the party would provide funding for 1,000 more physical education teachers, as well as 1,000 more educational assistants. "I think the first way we can ensure successful outcomes for students is to have successful relationships with education workers," he said. Naidoo-Harris said the Liberals deserve credit for decreasing class sizes, improving test scores and graduation rates, and introducing all-day kindergarten. As well, she said the government contributed to 22 new Halton schools either now open, under construction or in planning phases. "We now have invested more in schools in Halton than the history of governments in this province." In a written question from the floor, the former journalist was asked to explain how the Liberal campaign promise of 60 minutes of physical activity every day could be integrated into the school curriculum. While supporting the idea of "getting kids out of that classroom chair and moving," NaidooHarris said she believes consultation with school boards and teachers will be necessary prior to implementing the idea. In response to another question from the floor, all three candidates said they support keeping Ontario's model of two publicly-funded school systems. The debate, organized by Danielli, was one of three sponsored by HDSB trustees in recognition of Education Day on May 27. Others in Halton were held in the Oakville riding and in Burlington. 5 | Thursday, May 29, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Finest Lighting Store in Oakville CONCEPT LIGHTING GROUP Suppliers of fine lighting to Casa Loma, North America's largest castle PLUS FREE LIGHT BULBS FOR LIFE* *See store for details SALE INSTALLATION * Oakville 243 Speers Rd. · 905-849-LITE (5483) Mississauga 5980 McLaughlin Rd. #3 NEAR BRITANNIA 905.712.4548 · Burlington 1515 N.
