Lacrosse challenge to honour fallen soldiers The Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association is teaming with one of its rivals to organize a day of competition that will honour the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The OMLA will host squads from the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association Sunday for the first annual Highway of Heroes Challenge Cup. The event, which will be contested at Oakville's Toronto Rock Athletic Centre on Invicta Drive, will feature 18 games between the two associations, ranging in age levels from paperweight (five-year-olds) to midget (17-year-olds). Opening ceremonies will be held at 9:45 a.m., with games beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until 7:30 p.m. The club that wins the most games will receive the Cup. The Highway of Heroes Challenge Cup was created by WMLA vice-president of rep Craig Wright and former OMLA vicepresident of rep Pat Walko, who began trading emails on the subject last fall. The event is named after the most direct route between the two centres, Highway 401, which includes a stretch from Toronto to Trenton that is designated the Highway of Heroes in recognition of Canadian soldiers killed in the line of duty. Money raised through fundraising initiatives and a charity barbecue will go towards Wounded Warriors Canada, a non-profit organization that assists Canadian Forces members who have been wounded or injured in their service to Canada. Oakville resident Dan McTeague, a former Canadian Member of Parliament for the riding of Pickering-Scarborough East whose children play in the OMLA, is a member of Wounded Warriors Canada's board of directors. Representatives from Wounded Warriors Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion Colour Guard and players from the National Lacrosse League will attend this weekend's inaugural challenge. 31 | Thursday, June 12, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com (5 and 6 year olds, 2008/2009 birth years for 2014/15 season) MINOR OAKS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INITIATION PROGRAM STARTING THIS FALL OFFERING 2 SEASONS Fall October 19-December 21/14, Evaluation Skate October 19, Gala Day December 21 Winter January 4-March 8/15, Evaluation Skate January 4, Gala Day March 8 Rugby players at sevens tourney in Germany Eight Oakville residents are part of Saskatchewan-based Dog River Howlers squads competing in an international rugby sevens tournament this week in Germany.
