Sports Briefs Another provincial Division 1 basketball medal for Vytis girls The Oakville Vytis under-16 girls (pictured, right) recently earned silver at the Ontario Basketball Association championships, the fifth time in as many years they have claimed a Division 1 medal. Oakville posted tight victories over Scarborough Blues Chong (43-42) and London Ramblers (4442) between losses to Hamilton Transway (54-35 in the tournament opener and 44-24 in the goldmedal game). The Vytis won Division 1 gold in 2012, silver in 2011 and 2013, and bronze in 2010. This was the first season the team competed at the pre-JUEL (junior elite) level. Members of the team are Tasja Rhooms, Julia Knez, Stephanie Findlay, Olivia Wilson, Rachel Kernohan, Sammy Baumgartner, Chelsea Murray, Brianna Iannazo, Kiana Steinauer, Ellen Ougrinov and Melody Wyslobicky. Other Oakville students to win events included Emily Carr's Young Jay-In (senior boys' long jump) and Jacob Martino (senior boys' triple jump); Falgarwood's Phoenix Carter (junior boys' 100m), Kousay Alyousef (intermediate boys' triple jump) and Tanner Guy (senior boys' 400m); Palermo's Maxwell Evans (junior boys' 200m), Ellie Pickett (intermediate girls' long jump) and Kobe Antwi (intermediate boys' long jump); Captain R. Wilson's Vahaab Cadha (intermediate boys' 400m) and Branen Wallis (senior boys' 200m); and Eastview's Emily Clamp (intermediate girls' 400m). Lamb relays E.J. James won the atom and bantam titles at the Lamb junior relay meet. The school earned the atom (Grade 4) title by finishing first in the boys' race and posting second-place finishes in the girls' and mixed events. E.J. James also won the girls' and mixed races in the bantam (Grade 5) division, adding a sixth-place effort in the boys' race. Post's Corners claimed the other title up for grabs, the tyke (Grade 3) division, by winning the boys' and mixed races. Post's Corners won the atom mixed race and finished second in the atom standings. Maple Grove was victorious in the bantam boys' race and second overall in bantam. Gapes relays Pine Grove won the atom pennant and was second in the other two divisions at the Gapes junior relay meet. The Bandits finished first in the atom girls' race and added silver-medal showings in the atom boys' and atom mixed events to comfortably win the atom division. The 20-year-old first baseman hit .412 during the NJCAA tournament, which featured 10 other regional champions from across the United States, and drove in seven runs. Larmour was also the recipient of a gold glove award for his defence. Mesa, the Southwest Region champs, entered the tournament as the top-ranked team. Faceoff is 8 p.m. Ball hockey players to represent Canada at world juniors Two Oakville residents hope to help Canada continue its domination of international junior ball hockey later this month in Bratislava, Slovakia. Zach Ribau and Christian Tremblay (pictured, from left) are part of the 22-player national under-16 team that will compete at the World Junior Ball Hockey Championships June 24-29. Canada is seeking a return to the top of the U16 podium after a bronze-medal effort in 2012, the last time the biennial tournament was held. Canada won the U18 and U20 divisions in 2012 after claiming U16 and U20 gold in 2010. The U20 team has won the tournament each of the previous three times it has been contested.
